Hello everyone and welcome to the SriLankan series, in these episodes we'll be sharing our experiences and adventureswith you of this beautiful jewel of an island.
We begin in Negombo and spend afew days heading south along the coast as far as Tangalle, we stopped off atvarious places along the way, pay a visit to the famous stilt fishermen, somethingI wanted to see since I was a child.
From there we head inland and up to themountainous area of Nuwara Eliya and Ella where tea paddies are aplenty andthe scenery is just awe-inspiring.
We continue north by a train and busheading through lush landscapes up to Kandy and up as far as beautifulSigiriya and the famous Polonnoruwa UNESCO site.
From there we make our wayback to Negombo slowly, stopping off at Habarana where we spent anight on the treehouse and then eventually stopped off at Pinnawala tosee the elephants, my favourite animal, playing around in the River Maha.
We metsome of the most amazing people along the way, we had some great adventures, we relaxed a little bit and saw some unbelievable sights.
This is ourexperience of the small island that gives it all.
Welcome to Sri Lanka!!!! Good morning everyone!!Okay so we're leaving Hikkaduwa this morning, we're heading to a little placecalled Unakuruwa which is just outside Tangalle a littlefurther east along the coast here in Sri Lanka So we're just leaving now, this is our driver for the day , once again, the same guy! Yeah so we're gonnahe's taking us down there we're stopping off at another beachcalled Hiriketiya which is just a little bit closer than where we're going inTangalle it's supposed to be a nice little bay so the drivers going to wait therefor us for a couple of hours so we can enjoy the beach there, so this is ourride, takes about an hour and a half to get there so yeah.
.
.
So here we are, Hiriketiya Beach Okay so we just arrived in Hiriketiya Beach Let's just go for a little walk, as you can see many little bars, a bit of music playing, massage places, surflessons to be had, wood-fired pizzas and this little joint.
I was just speaking toone guy, he said that like five years ago there was nothing here, it was just asmall little secluded bay where you know no one really came to It's a bit moreexpensive to stay here than a lot of other places along the coast.
I'm justgonna check this little place out because it's like an old school bus, yeahand I think it's like somewhere you can get some food and things so yeahit's like a little restaurant.
.
.
So yeah a beautiful little place, we'rejust spending a couple of hours here.
We're staying in another small bay a fewmore kilometers east of here.
Anyway let's continue along the beach, let's goand see where the lazybones is.
.
.
.
Ok so that was our time in Hiriketiya, we're gonna head now to Unakuruwa where we're gonna spend two nights.
Okay so we've just arrived at Unakuruwabeach, it's just about seven kilometers away from where we were beforefrom Hiriketiya beach, so I'm just gonna take you for a little walk through it'sabsolutely awesome.
Yeah so this is the bar area I guess.
Many little dogs asusual.
Hello.
.
.
The dogs are so chill around here it'sunreal, so yeah you've like a little bar here many little chairs many little places tosit chill out, it's like a little river here.
Also we're by the ocean obviouslywhich you're going to see right now This little place where you can sitand you can see the river kinda goes up there They've got kayaks here also so I don'tknow maybe maybe we can go up there at some point.
So let's head down towardsthe beach.
There's a little place just up here.
.
.
it's like a little spot.
Let's go upthere quickly.
.
.
Welcome to paradise!! I mean there's no one here in comparisonto Hiriketiya where we've just been.
Let's just go down to the beach.
There'sFabiola, she's already in the sea you see her waving in the distance, see if we canzoom in on her, there.
Let's go over and head over there.
All the local fishingboats, I'm pretty sure we're gonna see some of the guys going out in these atsome point but look at this.
I think she's happy in there, she seems happy in there on her own yeah absolutely stunning!!! Say hello! He has some food what do you have here? What's this? I think he has some kind offruit like this guy's got yeah, A local guy I think he's just selling abit of fruit yeah? Nice to meet you nice to meet you! He just offered me a bit of weed, haha!Literally he's just.
.
.
all over Sri Lanka's been like that be fair which is yeah, nothing wrong with that I guess! Some little kid here trying to catchsomething with his hands, either crabs or little fish I guess.
He's got a little plasticpot there He's going to find something and there'sa little bottle look.
.
.
I'm gonna see what he's catching.
Hello, what do you catch? Fish? Yeah small fish Ah, here look! one here, they are thetiniest little fish, you hold in your hand, let's see look at that babi, canyou see that little fish on my hand? There, that little thing in the middle isa fish, tiny, I mean look at that compared the size of my hand and this little kidis like just catching them, well, like this.
.
.
Can you see them in there? Can you seethem moving? So you do this for fun yeah? Yeah.
Haha beach life!!! Okay so I was just about to film a walkto the beach and then.
.
.
Hey bro! How's it going? You good? yeah?Nice to meet you.
Thank you.
Yeah we're just getting some video of yourbeautiful country say hello to the camara, everyone is so friendly around here.
How are you guy's good? We stay in the Moon River.
Yeah so this guy he works in the place where we're staying.
So I was just going to get some video footage and these guys just come over tosay hello, you want to shake your head? Ah so friendly no? So I was just tryingto get some footage anyway of like where we're stayinglet's get back to the program.
Moon River this is the little place we're stayinghere in Unakuruwa and then there's like a little I don't know I think there's asurf place here and a burger joint this guy's dying to get back on thecamera look.
So yeah anyways, they absolutely love welcoming you here asyou can see but yeah this is what the beach why just showing you just from adifferent perspective this is coming off from the main road, well the road, that's the road, I would hardly say it's the main road butyeah I think we've got some lazy little person down here.
She doesn'tmove off these sunbeds, you know she's a very lazy person.
Don't let her hear me saythat she will kick my ass! Hola! Just saying how energetic you are, just explaininghow , you know , you love to get off of them beds, but you can't blame her, lookat that look at that for a view! Can't help love these beach dogs!! Hello.
Okay so we got up early for sunrise thismorning, had a pretty decent sunrise to be fair and we had the company of thedog which was nice, we saw a fisherman come in on his boat which you just sawwith all of his friends help him once he came up onto the beach which is reallynice to see a very nice community spirit.
Good morning! this is our second day here, yesterday we just spent the whole day on the beach, really didn't do too much wehad some food in the evening and just totally relaxed, just chilled outhere with a couple of the local guys and then had a couple of beers and stufflike that so I just wanted to show you the room that we got we've got here.
Itwas just under ten pounds a night so pretty basic, we have a couple of chairs, a little balcony here, So the bed is huge it's like aking-size bed, a fan , a little table a nice little painting above the bed, very basic but 10 pounds a night absolutely amazing really, a shower room which i woke up to a huge cockroach this morning and some nice little lizardsand little geckos, the shower very good nice and powerful soeverything you kind of need you know.
So yeah that's the room, I just kind ofwanted to show you that.
Let's go down to the beach.
I guess Fabiola's down at the beach now and.
.
.
just make sure I've got the key! She's over there! Let's see if I can zoom in, there she is! So we're just gonna spend a couple ofhours here I think.
We also need some Wi-Fi.
We don't get Wi-Fi here we need tobook our next place for tomorrow so we're going to go and try and findsomewhere with a little bit of decent Wi-Fi and hopefully book into our next place which is going to be Ella.
We're heading up to Ella tomorrow so we're leavingthe coast, we're leaving the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka for now and we'regonna head inland up to the mountains so we're going to enjoy our last day here.
These ants carrying this little piece of shell Look at that, teamwork! Carrying a piece of shell.
D they bite? They bite yeah? Yeah.
They're strong little buggers them.
We are on our last night here in Unakuruwa, we had a nice relaxing day on thebeach, dogs all over the place chillin'.
We found a nicelittle surf place just down the road and some guys just built it three months ago and we had some food there it was absolutely beautiful.
We are gonna head to Tangalle which is the nearest town to where we are here tonight.
There's supposed to be a nice fish market there and an old town so, we're going to freshenup and then we're gonna head into the town.
So we've just ventured out of the beach stay forthe first time.
This is the main road.
We're getting the bus into the town Tangalle So we don't know, I think the bus stops down there somewhere yeah it's a veryquiet road compared to some of the roads we've seen actually so the bus journeymight not be too scary this time but we'll see.
Very nice little lagoon just by the mainroad.
Yeah it's a really nice nature very nice.
There's the bus stop.
I guess this is the bus stop, very colorful.
they beat the ones in the UK that's for sure! Hello.
Tangalle? Yeah? Thank you.
So I've just done a little currency conversion how much it's costing us toget to the place and it's costing us both 17 pence, eight and a half pence each, is not a bad price I'd say! Ok, so we've just arrived in Tangalle So we're not quite sure where we're going just gonna cruise around and see what's going on We're basically trying to cross the road it's a little bit tricky but we got there inthe end Okay so this is the local traditional dish called Kottu beingmade, as you see they chop it up really finely and there's the chicken going in.
It's a very nice, after about a week of being here we finally found out that youcan ask for it to be not spicy.
We've been getting it really spicy but yeahKotu.
A little monkey just in the suburbs ofTangalle and a crow.
So this is one of the beaches in Tangalle, alot of fishing going on here as you can see all the boats.
They all they goout at night time basically to fish here so yeah.
So we've just noticed, thisis obviously the fishing part of the beach and you can see there's a lotof a lot of rubbish, a lot of trash, a lot of waste on the beach you know.
And then this little section here is made for the tourists where they rakethe sand and take care of it and that kind of thing.
There's a restaurant upthere and there's a nice little place just over here.
Fa's enjoying thesand in between her toes and surprise surprise there's Bob Marley playing.
They are very big fans of Bob Marley over here it's like , everywhere! c=Coollittle place though.
I don't think there's like a trafficlight system on this bridge.
Here she comes, trouble!! What is this? they are like little shells, It's kind of like almost like making a pancake but it kind of sticks to the edge of the pan and then whenthey pull it out it turns into almost like a bowl.
Okay so these are known as Hoppers, which are also known as Appaand are an iconic food of Sri Lanka.
It begins with a simple pancake batterthat's spruced up with coconut milk and a splash of Sri Lankan palm wine.
Theunique part is that the Hoppers are usually cooked in a small wok like panso the dough cooks thick and softer on the bottom and thin and crunchy aroundthe edge.
Hoppers can be plain or with a fried egg in the middle.
This guy is justgiving this one for free thank you very much thank you thank you thank you verymuch so , provecho babi! It's good? Si! This little guy was just sat on Fabiola's lap, we've been sat uphere for like I don't know a little while and then she just felt somethingon her knee and it jumped off and it was this littlefella! Check him out!! So you can see how all the fishermen gettogether when bringing the boat in.
One guy came in on the boat all of hisfriends come over to help him get his boat up onto the onto the sand bank herewhich is really nice.
They all just chip in and help one another you know so Idon't know whether he's caught anything or not but yeah good community spirit, everyone helping one another, beautiful! So we're gonna see you in Ella I guess, providing we get the bus, providing there's a space for us to get on, socatch you soon okay.
peace!! Ok, so we hope you enjoyed that section of our trip, in the next episode we leave the coast by bus and head north an inlandto the town of Ella, we hire a scooter and head into the surrounding hillswhere we ride through tea plantations and we meet a woman with the mostamazing smile! I take a hike up Ella rock for sunrise and we pay a visit to theinfamous nine arch bridge.
We hope to see you there, until then, take care but havefun.
PEACE!!!.
