hey everyone and welcome back to our monthly video on the x3 English Channel I'm Amanda and in today's lesson we're going to be talking about how to explain something in daily conversation basically we're going to be talking using sequence words like first next then after that but hold
on make sure you've liked this video and click the bell button to get all the latest updates from us alright let's get started as I said before today's topic will talk about how to explain something in daily conversation this video will demonstrate a case where you may need
to ask for someone's instruction and you may also need to give someone instructions I want to begin by introducing you to two questions these questions can be used when asking for someone's help hey can you come here what's wrong can you teach me how to use this app
so the point is in this case they use the word teach in American English we more often use the word to show instead of course there's no problem to use the word teach however I recommend to use the word show to sound more natural excuse me can you
show me how to get to the gas station oh yeah sure you just have to go straight a hundred yards and an acre right thank you Oh what's wrong do I need my head yeah I don't know how to upload my pictures onto my computer can you show
me oh sure when you need someone's help with something you can ask this question can you show me how to in this question the phrase can you show me how to should be followed by a verb in the simple present tense for example can you show me how
to do the homework can you show me how to do this task another way to say this is to use the expression I don't know how – followed by the request can you show me for example I don't know how to fix the computer can you show me
I don't know how to use the microwave can you show me it's that easy but what if you are the one who received those questions today we will focus on how to show someone a process or how to explain a process to someone let's use these sequence words
or I like to call them transition words they are first next then after that once you've done that once you've finished that last and finally while these are just some basic words they can be used in everyday conversation to explain or show someone the process of doing something
the word first this is obviously the first step the very first thing you need to do in a process or a sequence then next we can use that for the next step after that it is very similar to after that after you want to continue using transition words
such as next then and after that it is important to switch up your vocabulary because if you only say next next next that's very unnatural when explaining a process now we will take a look at when you've done that when you've finished that basically when you finish an
action or something has been completed you go to the next step our final two words our last and finally you use these two words to introduce the last step of a process that you are explaining almost all these words you use when explaining how a process works here's
a quick example of a three step sequence you in use imagine you are showing a friend how to watch videos on the x3 English Channel I'm going to use the expression first this is the first step of the process followed by a verb first open YouTube this is
step 1 for the next step I'm going to use Ben let's also use a different verb then type in x3 English in the search bar for the last step I'm going to use once you've finished that in this case once you finish that click on the channel and
watch x3 English videos this is a very simple sequence I've explained steps 1 2 & 3 using the words first then and once you finish that I use present tense verbs because present tense is used for regular action today's lesson has been helpful not only for speaking but
for emails for written correspondence letters and whenever you want to show or teach someone how to do something remember to use present tense when explaining the process of doing something here is an example of how to use transition words when explaining how to make a peanut butter and
jelly sandwich first you need to get two pieces of bread next you need to take a knife and spread peanut butter on one of the pieces of bread then spread jelly on the remaining piece of bread that you have after that take both pieces and put them together
finally cut the sandwich down the middle and enjoy it so that's our lesson for today I hope you enjoyed it feel free to ask any questions by commenting down below also let me know if there's any subjects you would like to talk about for next time don't forget

or something thank you so obvious no I need a break
