(mellow music) – Ah! (person laughs) – (exhales) Hey, youall, it's me, Lily Lu, and today, we make a smalltutorial how we make dreadlocks.
We have our friend Ake here.
– What's up? – We meet him here like a few weeks ago because our love tocoffee was bring us here.
He living in his small bus and a tent just right behind on the beach.
And he was speaking about, in the very few littlewords of English he speak, that he wants some dreadlocks, so we will make him some dreadlocks today.
Already got two, twodreadlocks already all in.
And we use this chance to showyou two different techniques how to make dreadlocks.
The first technique from my wife.
She will explain you howshe will do the dreadlocks.
She make dreadlocks for many, many years.
And then I will show youalso the technique I use, which I also use for many, many years, so let's start.
(imitates static hissing) So actually it's very, very simple to make dreadlocks yourselfor to make it to a friend or something like this, and I mean, there are no perfect dreadlocks exist because when there's onething what dreadlocks need, it's time, time, and time, so even when you are, like, watch them together perfectlybut there will the time pass and the hair is changing and moving and whatever, and it still needs some work from time to time.
But also there are no real laws.
Some peoples like very wild and nature-looking-like dreadlocks.
Some likes moreperfect-lookish ones (laughs).
So there is no real rules for dreadlocks.
You can just let them grow naturally also, so just go for it (laughs).
(upbeat music) So actually the mostimportant thing what you need is like this comb.
This cost 20 baht here, so it's not something super super special.
And you just crunch the hair together, and that's basically is it already.
I mean, just try it out, you know how dread looks, so whatever you use fortools, just go there.
(warm music) – Hello, my name is Anuskatzz, and today we make Thai dreadlocks here at the beautiful beachfrom Thong Pan (laughs).
So normally I have clamps and everything, but right now, it's a veryspontaneous dreadlock making, so I just have my crochethook and the comb.
It depends where you come from, but the hair's always a bit different.
So this hair is verystrong, it's very thick, so I will make very big dreadlocks.
In the front I will try to keep them a bit smaller than on theback, but on the back, Lily will make him anyway the dreadlocks, so I am more for the frontand that it looks good and that it fits perfect.
I try to make a good angle here, and I try to go with the head.
So we have in the middle some space that he can comb his hairon the left or on the right, so I will work with it.
And also here I will keepeverything as good as possible because here men normally lose their hair, so I will try to putthe dread over this side that you don't see thatmuch from it later.
So now I will try to get the hair into a perfect shape for the dreadlocks, and in the beginning, I make the hair a bit stiff, that knots coming inside.
And now with this comb, yousee it's with metal plates, I start to go around the hair, making like a circle and get the hair in a good condition to work with the crochet hookand make a dread out of it.
(cheerful music) So when you think now it'sover, it's not (laughs).
You have to make way more, and this is why I usenow the crochet hook.
And here I will also go incircles around the hair, and yeah, work myselfup until I'm on the top that I have a real, real, real good structure that the knots who are now in his hairs start to getting into dreadlocks.
He will survive.
When I work with the crochet hook, I have some pressure betweenthe thumb and this finger.
Then I have his hair andI go with the crochet hook because the hook have a little, see, this on the side that I work with the hair through his new dread.
So you see here is the hook, and then I go through the hair between my thumb and this finger.
When you make the first dread, you don't know exactlyhow the hair could be.
It is the first dread isalways to see how it will work, how you can do it, and howyou can adapt the work to do.
After the third dread, youare finally in the right mood and then you know exactlyhow much pressure you need, how you have to work with the comb, and then you know what you have to do to get the dreadlocks inform, in shape and form, but this needs some time.
So normally what I do toget a bit more in touch with his hair and with his dread, I make the first dreadlockand I see how it works and if it works good and easy, and then I adapt my mistakes or I adapt my knowledge for the next hair because you feel how it works, because you see how many hairyou need to work with it.
This is very, very importantthat you take care of this.
So now you see thedreadlocks come in shape.
This is all because of the crochet hook and because I take the comb and put everything in form.
So the comb make the hair knotty and the crochet hook make thehair to a dread, actually.
And then you need a lot of timethat they grow so beautiful as you might want to have them.
(gentle music) – So we working now together as a team.
– Ooh, ooh, ooh.
– I just go over everything to make it a little bit more tight, and we let the ends openbecause his hair is not so long, so it will look a little bit longer.
Okay, I show you now my technique.
It start pretty similarthan most techniques.
I just choose my field.
I try to go roughly the same size.
Okay, so what I do is I kindof twist this a little bit, and then I backcomb it.
In between, I take thehair and I kind of split it and pull it down and indifferent directions.
I kind of take it and Iroll it and put it down.
Kind of make a mix of backcombingand the splitting thing.
Okay, then we roll it little bit.
What I do now is I kind of look in what direction I want the dread.
I put my finger through, and now I kind of twistall the top together and put it through, through the root almost.
So I kind of get the dread already in the direction I want it later, and I kind of get it already a little bit tight on the bottom.
So this is my special needle.
It's a combination of alot of felting needles I just put together, so it's just like, makes everything much more fast.
♪ What's up ♪ ♪ You want make some dreadlocks ♪ ♪ Or just repair, fix, or maintain them ♪ ♪ This is the tool you need ♪ ♪ Take some simple felting needles ♪ ♪ And make your dread ultra-master ♪ ♪ Oh yeah ♪ ♪ It just takes foreverwith a normal tool ♪ ♪ Let's change this ♪ (warm acoustic guitar music) So this is a littlebit the technique I use for making a little bit more thick dreads.
I'm not good with making more thin dreads.
I don't know if this isa recommended technique, especially with like asuper big needle like this.
But the dreads itself, they get very, very hard already in the beginning, so it's a very good base, I would say.
And I kind of stab a few times.
Then I go out, twist it a little bit.
So that is my technique.
I would say it goes very fast.
The dread itself looksalready very nice and tight, and you can feel it's veryhard and solid.
(laughs) (upbeat music) And don't give us too much flower points for sitting on the beachwhile someone play guitar and we making dreads.
(Lily and Katzz laughing) She was already mentioned shereally feels like a hippie.
(Ake speaks in foreign language) (gentle music) – Wow, eeh! (speaks in foreign language) Wow.
– [Lily] Good, right on.
(Ake speaks in foreign language) Mm! – Okay, so we needed four hours to make this dreadlockslike they look right now, and I am absolutely looking forward how they will look in a few years.
I hope you will still have them then.
I am feeling totally honored to make a Thai person dreadlocks.
I already had a few other cultures, like Turkish and Arab, but now a Thai personis absolutely awesome to make him dreads and yeah.
(Katzz speaks in foreign language) (Lily speaks in foreign language) (Katzz laughs)(warm music) – So that's it.
She was make most of the work.
I helped her a little bit andnow it's just time time time.
So the best what he cando or what you could do is go in the ocean whenyou need to wash your hair because salt water really dries them out, and don't use shampoo or anything will makes your hair healthy because you don't wantto have healthy hair.
You want to have healthy dreadlocks, and that is something different.
So it's good to see him having fun, and you seen it's very simple and easy to make dreadlocks yourself, so just– – Yeah, you just need a bit more practice because it takes some time, so you need strong muscles to make dreads happen.
And we will now come every year here to check if he has still his dreadlocks and see the progress.
– But he will, he will.
– Hopefully.
– Because you don't see somuch people with dreadlocks in Thailand, and most of themare real kind of subculture, and yeah, this is how he lives, so we will be pretty sure he will have these dreadsfor a very long time, and he will grow them long (laughs).
(Katzz laughing) (birds chirping).
