How to Get More Blog Followers Organically (Using SEO Tactics)

However, I like to say what you should do is chase one rabbit until you catch it, tame it, train it, get it working for you, and then go chase the second rabbit.

You gotta just press record.

Man, we got Jeanelle on.

– Oh my God.

Janelle, how's it goin'? – Hi, I'm good.

How are you, Sean? I have to move 'cause we'reboth working from home, me and my boyfriend, and I'mbeing loud right now (laughs).

– Awesome, and I'm sofired up that you were able to come on The Coffeewith Cannell Q&A Show.

Where you at, and what's it like on the ground where you're at? – Sure, I am in sunny Southern California, so in Orange County, and it's beautiful, but we are of course stayingat home and staying safe.

But yeah, it's been good, and I'm drinking green tea, or I left it over there, but (laughs).

– I love it, I love it.

What is your business, your niche? What do you do? – Sure, okay, so that's actually.

For a long time I wasembarrassed to tell people that I was a YouTuber, and then people weretelling me, like, “Why?” Right, so now I'm doing a lot more of, Jeanelleats is a channel that I have, and it focuses on Filipinofood, and culture, and I did some travel vlogs, so I do other global eats as well, and so people know me forthat as a content creator, but I also am, I've brandedmyself as a video marketer, because of all this stuffI learned from you guys in Video Ranking Academy, I was able to use that and help other people, because I do also have a marketing background, and so people knew me for two things, and I think for me it'skinda getting overwhelming, especially now, and I'm like, okay, I have a fork in the road.

Which one do I take? And I really wanna takethe Jeanelleats route, but I guess I have a storyin my head that like, it's not gonna be as lucrative than if I just continuedown the marketing route, but obviously, this is what I love to do, and a few of my videos have done well, but I'm also trying to be mindful of am I just inflating this success, and I should really just step back, chill out for a second, bring up my stats tosomething a lot more tangible? Right, before I can actuallystart gunnin' for it, so that's where I'm like, mm, I'm torn.

– Really amazing questions to unpack here.

So really, the question, just so I get it right, is one, you're kinda tornbetween what you absolutely love, Jeanelleats, but alsoyou've been helping people with video marketing? – Yes.

– And obviously that has a moredirect business correlation, so that, in the short term especially, seems that it could be more lucrative, but if you have a thing that you love but you're wondering, is that even, does it have potential? And are you feeling overwhelmed? – I guess I'm feeling overwhelmedon the social media end, because I do help peoplewith social media, and a lot of people knowme for the Filipino food, and the culture, and all that stuff, but they also understand that I can help them in social media just because of what I'mworking on for Jeanelleats.

However, I am so tempted to create videos kinda like how you do, where I'm like, “How to create TED talk videos”, or how to rank yourselfon Instagram, and YouTube, and things like that, but to be honest, I feel like, you know when you're dabblingin a little bit of everything, and you're not going far in one thing? And especially with now, right? People are hitting me up, they're like, “I wanna pick your brainon ranking on social media” and I'm just like, okay, but also people are signing up for like, a Filipino bread-makingclass that I'm doing, so it's like, what do I do? I just wanna stick to one.

– Next question: do you need money? I'm serious.

– Yes, yes.

– And so, like meaning you've got to pay the bills every month, andhow do you do that right now? Well actually, I've set myself up, because I don't thinkI would've left my 9-5 if I didn't have this home.

I am fortunate enough to live in a home where I don't have to payrent, and I don't have to pay the utilities or anything like that, but I am mindful ofbusiness expenses, right, for things that, I mean ConvertKit, and other tools that I have, food, student loans, which, you know, I emailed them for that, but that's– – Got it.

– I guess my questions are minimizing the costs that I have, and with what I'm doing right now, it's kind of like it's justenough to get by, but with– – And where's the moneycome from right now? To pay for food, to payfor your ConvertKit? – Everywhere, like super random now.

So people do ask me for likesocial media consulting help.

I've created videos in thepast for people before, the actual video editing.

I recently got paid at a photo shoot, like right now, I'm pickingup as much as I can, but primarily, it woulddefinitely have to be the social media consulting, and video editing services.

– Got it, so a couple things.

A really good question, and thanks so much for coming on Coffee with Cannell, and the first-ever show, so you know, I think that one maybe perspective shift is reframing what you're doing, 'cause everybody hasto work at some point, unless they've got someother kind of income, and you're right, focus is power.

If you try and chase two rabbits, you'll end up catching neither of them.

However, I like to say what you should do is chase one rabbit until you catch it, tame it, train it, get it working for you, and then go chase the second rabbit.

So rather than try to chasethem both at the same time.

– Right.

– So I think practically, the way I see it, I think that, you know that this isyour passion channel.

You know that this isalso what you wanna do, and I also believe thatthis has incredible upside.

You could go all-in on it, and I believe you could get there, to a tipping point where it produces what you need from it.

However, you just have to be realistic that if you went all-in on it, you might be homeless, which doesn't sound, but you know, you literallymight start losing money, so there's the practicalityof this whole thing, where this is kinda your passion project that has longterm potential, and then you've also got this other thing, which you're also passionate about, and it sounds like skilled at, but it's not as much of your passion, but I think what you could frame is there's passion and there's practical, and in a way, what a blessing it is that you can work from homesocial media consulting, video editing, and Ithink it's really about calendar-blocking your time to say, step one, a couple practical takeaways, really define how much youneed to live on per month.

Like, get that number clear.

Step two, this'll help everybody watching, identify what is yourshortest path to revenue? At our team, we call'em IPAs, not the beer, income producing activities.

What are your highestincome producing activities, and for you, you might belike, “I need $3, 000 a month”, let's say, and so fromsocial media consulting, and even from YouTube adsand some other things, here's where that money could come from, here's what the actionsI would need to take, and then you just have to be willing.

A lot of people watching have to work 30, 40, 45, 50 hours a week, and then go home and workon their side project.

Here's the blessing ofwhat you have going on.

Your passion project gives your practical project credibility.

One of the reasons whypeople wanna listen to you is because you are growing your social, you are growing these things, you do have almost 6, 000subscribers on YouTube.

You have got the results, so you are able to help others with that.

So I also see that they're both connected, and maybe you might be ableto harmonize them more, experience a little bit more peace by seeing the harmony between them, but I think there issomething about practicality that if you need money today, your passion projectdoes actually have to, in my opinion, be on the back burner, and that your practical project is the bridge to get you there.

You know, my background is in like ministry and church world, and when you look at Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament, so he was like this guy, he wrote the New Testament, he wanted to be sharin' the Gospel, he wanted to be goin' out anddoin' that thing full time, but there's all these passagesthat say he made tents.

So he had a skill of like making tents, so he had a day job, andhe talked about times where he hoped, like today's churches, people would give offerings so he could do the ministry full-time.

They weren't, and he told 'em, he goes, he's basically like, “Y'allshould be supportin' me, “but I'm not even gonna demand it, “and I work harder thanall of y'all makin' tents.

“I work all day, and Ipreach the Gospel all night.

And, that's in Corinthians, and so I see him, and I think, man, that's the hustle, that when his dream job, his dream vocation was to be all-in helpin' people with Filipino foods, you know what I mean?(Jeanelle laughs) But there was a season of his life where he also had to make tents.

I think you might be ableto find joy in both things, and literally do both, to basically in a way think of social media coaching, and video editing even, work, and where this getstough, and why I empathize is it's hard to edit videofor someone else all day, then do the same thing for yourself because you're like, “I don't wanna edit “freakin' video anymore.

“- Oh, yeah (laughs).

– Am I right? – Yes, I'm just like, it's dark, I'm tired.

My eyes feel like they'reabout to fall off (laughs).

– Right, and so youkinda have to, I dunno, get outta the housesafely, social distance, take a walk, reset, stretch your arms out, whatever, your hands, because of video editing.

But I really think that, again, if you can stir up your love, and joy, and passion to really goall-in with making short term, bigger money from thesethings that you know how to do while continuing to do yourpassion project channel, and you know, what I would say on that is that the other thingis, I would not blend them, and I don't know if youwould've thought that, but this channel is clear as day as far as what the niche is, as far as where it's going, and so I hesitate to say this, but in light of knowing you now and getting to hear about the context, it is essentially starting another channel or another vehicle of communication, so for example, like whatthat could look like is, and lemme give another, I think this will help.

Heather Torres on the Think Media team has struggled with hersocial media, and here's why: because she's got a YouTube channel that is about homeschool, so she thinks, “Okay, my social identity online, “I am this homeschool thought leader”, you know, “15, 000 subscribers, “people look to me for homeschool.

” But here's the problem: Similarly, and she loves homeschool, and she wants to do more videos here, but she works at Think Media, and she is like this incredible, savage, Facebook Ads, you know, socialmedia coach, clarity coach.

She's like a massive leader.

She's managing our team.

She creates content, she runs our podcast.

She hosts our podcast, soit's like an identity crisis, like “Woo am I on Instagram? “'Cause I'm like this homeschool.

” But I think what might help is you don't have to be the same thing on every platform.

You could have just onevideo marketing podcast, I know it's a video marketing pod, but like where, and maybe like, and definitely don'tspread yourself too thin, 'cause if you're workin' by yourself, you really can't managetwo Instagram accounts, two Facebook pages, LinkedIns too, but you may just think ofwhere does my business flow? And your YouTube channel, here's the good news.

The cool thing about YouTube, it doesn't have to have anything to do with other social media channels.

'Cause YouTube has sucha powerful algorithm, once you get videos suggested, once you get that brandgoing, it could literally, and I notice you don't even actually have social media linked up here, so you could actually belike video marketing queen, like social media coach, and yes, you might then actually from that world point to what you're doing on YouTube, but your YouTube channel stands alone.

People subscribe for the Filipino recipes.

They follow you for all of that, and you use that as a casestudy, but you're maybe, especially it sounds likeyou got Instagram chops, so you're maybe able to then get leads, and help people, and use that, so maybe, and if this is helpin', and I'd love to answerany final questions, after this, plan on paper, and break down some branding clarity, and again, I think what causes confusion is even if, you might say YouTuber or YouTube Creator in your Instagram bio, but when people's social media bios, come on, Think fam, lean in right now.

When people's social media bios say “Best-selling fitness author, cryptocurrency investor, “wine enthusiast with The Wine podcast”, you know, “Family man.

” Like, you're like, “Dude, what are you doing?” How can anybody follow you if you don't know where you're going? So it's actually getting clarity, like people are followingyour Instagram account, mad videos, social media tips, and pointing to your YouTube videos, but do you know your identity there? Your YouTube channel's clear as day, because that's already dialed, and then maybe you chip awayat some video marketing videos, or maybe not, because you'realready getting business without any other channels, so you need to double downon what is it you're doing.

For example, and thiswas one practical idea, maybe it's LinkedIn thatyou actually start sharing video marketing tips, because the organic reach on LinkedIn's so crazy, andyou take the one channel to, people don't even knowyour Filipino channel does, and by the way, they'reprobably not looking for cooking tutorials over here, and so over on LinkedIn, from a business, coaching, social media, you know, we posta lot of stuff on LinkedIn.

I repurposed some stories right here, downloaded some stories.

This obviously gives a call to action that builds an email list, et cetera, and I mean, my LinkedIn effortsare supported by my team, to be clear, and are, I don't spend a ton of energy, but the reach, the amount of people that are following, and building a network, that has been crazy.

I have like 5, 000, 2, 000 maybe connections here or something, and I literally don't evenknow where to find 'em.

Now it's 20, 000 or something, because again, I'mshowin' up consistently.

So picking maybe a platformwhere you're gonna build the business, practical, dayjob side of what you're doing.

Passion side, that you alsostay as consistent as possible, and then here's the goal.

Eventually what you're tryingto do is retire yourself should you want to, yougive yourself that freedom, where you know how much youneed to live on every month, and you eventually go, “Cool, the ad cents “on my Filipino food channelis hitting that $3, 000 mark.

” And you just phase out the stuff that you're not as interested, or you just do it on aper, real optional basis because a friend really wants help and they can afford your fee, and you raise your fees, and whatever.

And you're like, cool, but then eventually you are basically using your, what we're framing as your day job, to be a bridge to your dream job, and I think if you get reallypractical and plan on paper, you can make that happen sooner by creating for yourself a clear path.

– I love it, thank you so much.

That LinkedIn piece, I was like, okay, that's great, 'causethat's where I could go, 'cause right now people are hitting me on the @jeanelleats Instagram, so yeah, like you said, people are confused, and you said, “I am aenthusiast in all this stuff”, and I was like oh my God.

That's my bio (laughs).

So I need to clean that up, so yeah, okay.

Action plans, I'm gonna go on LinkedIn, and that's where I am gonna be delivering all of my video marketing stuff, and then Jeanelleats Instagram, YouTube.

People can still hit me up there, because, I dunno, that's just wherethey know to contact me– – Of course could cross over.

– On Instagram.

– But I think when you get really clear, it's what will triggergrowth on each platform because people like tofollow that feature to count.

What do they know you for, what do you know 'em for? And people can have different identities.

When you blend 'em, you know, I'm like recipe, recipe, recipe, video marketing, like what are you doing? I'm tryin' to see the food, man.

Like, get outta my Instagram feed.

And, how hot LinkedIn is, and how many people wannalearn video on LinkedIn, it's like a goldmine right now.

Like if you double downand stay consistent, apply for LinkedIn Live Beta, and start, you know, you could dolive streams over there.

I'm sure you could get approved– – Oh my God.

– With those ties to your YouTube channel, and they see that you got the chops.

Eventually it'll be open to everybody.

LinkedIn's gonna do stories, so you might be ableto, that was announced, and so it starts, and then bythe way, people there that, LinkedIn is the wealthiest social network.

It's professionals, it'speople that are serious, so it maps more to again, the day job, and then, stay just joy-filledin this whole thing, because what a blessing that you already have autonomywith these two niches, that you've already got momentum, you've already got your YouTube channel, you already have growth.

You get to work from home, now people have to work from home, and so, you know, not everyday is unicorns and rainbows.

– Yes.

– But it's sometimes looking at like, you could be washing dishes, or doing something you absolutely hate, and like, if you have toedit video for somebody else, you're like, “This isa pretty cool blessing.

“I'm chillin', drinkin'my green tea”, you know, in Southern California, could be worse.

“And then tonight, I'm gonnacook up some Filipino dishes “and make some videos.

” Life is good.

– I love it, thank you so much.

And tell Vin James that she just had arevelation yes (laughs).

You made it so clear.

Thank you so much, Sean.

I know you have other people on here, but you are such a blessing to me and to everybody else, like my channel wouldn't be where it was now.

I wouldn't have the confidence if it wasn't for everythingyou've helped me with, so thank you.

– Appreciate you so much.

Thanks for comin' on the show.

Cheers to the green tea.

– Yes, over there.

– I'm outta bone broth.

And one of these days, I'mgonna get some more coffee, but all right, take care, have a good day.

– 'Bye, you too.

(rhythmic digital music).
