If you need to close or reduce hours at yourretail stores, or if you’re looking for a safe way to get products to your customers, then consider offering local pickup for online orders.

You don’t need a retail storefront to offerlocal pickup — pickup can be anywhere you stock inventory or fulfill orders, like awarehouse.
Local pickup is automatically available inyour shipping settings if you’re eligible to use it.

Now, before we get started, there’re a fewimportant details you need to know.
1 – You should only offer pickup if this isadvised and allowed by your local authorities.
Make sure to research the current governmentrecommendations in your region.
2 – If you live in an area that can offerpickup, then confirm that your location addresses are correct in the locations settings.
If you want to create a new location for pickup, then follow the steps in the help article below.
For example, you might want to create a locationthat’s in front of a warehouse so you don’t have to distribute products to your stores.
You should also open each location and confirmthat the box ‘Fulfill online orders from this location’ is checked — otherwisepickup won’t be available.
3 – Make sure that your products are stockedat the pickup location.
For example, if an order contains a productthat is not stocked at the New York location, then the New York pickup option won’t beavailable at checkout.
Let’s get started in the Shopify admin.
Click Settings, and then click Shipping.
Next, scroll down to the Additional Deliverymethods section and click set up pickup.
Select the locations where you want to offerpickup, and click Next.
First, select an expected pickup time.
At checkout, customers see this so they knowroughly when their order will be ready.
Choose an option that gives you or your stafftime to prepare packages.
It’s your responsibility to keep track ofand meet the pickup times that you set.
Then enter the pickup instructions that willbe sent to your customers when the order is ready.
In this example, we’re offering curbsidepickup.
In the instructions, we explain the procedurefor picking up a package and procedures for maintaining physical distance.
We also include a disclaimer that orders canonly be picked up during the hours of 8am-8pm, Monday through Friday.
This makes sure that customers do not cometo the location when we’re not available.
Don’t worry about mentioning any shippingcosts.
By default, shipping is always free for pickuporders.
The pickup time and instructions you set hereare assigned to all locations where pickup is available.
If you’d like, you can edit individual locationinstructions later.
When you finish, click Enable pickup.
If you ever need to disable pickup for a location, click Manage.
Then, uncheck This location offers pickup, and click Save.
After you click Manage, you can adjust thepickup instructions and pickup time for the specific location.
To finish, click Save.
And you’re all done with set up.
Your customers now have the option to selectpickup when they check out on your online store.
Remember, the location for pickup only showsif all products in the order are in stock at that location.
In this example, the customer chooses theNew York location and sees the estimated pickup time that we set earlier.
After the customer finishes checking out, they’re emailed the order confirmation.
The email tells your customer that they’llreceive another email when the order is ready for pickup.
Next, it’s time to fulfill the pickup order.
This can be done from the Shopify admin orthe Shopify mobile app.
From the Shopify admin, click Orders.
All pickup orders are marked with a pickupindicator.
Click on the order to see the products.
This is a test order we created which is whyyou see the banner here.
After you package and label the order, clickPrepare for pickup.
Confirm that all products have been set asidefor the customer.
You can also print a packing slip to includewith the order.
When the order is ready, click ‘Send notification’to let the customer know that their order is ready for pickup.
The instructions you created earlier are sentto the customer and they’re notified that their order is ready for pickup.
The email includes a link to a map customerscan use to find your pickup location.
After your customer arrives and picks up theirorder, find the order by searching for the customer’s profile or order number.
To complete fulfillment, open the order andclick Mark as picked up.
The order is now marked as fulfilled.
Consider the following measures for a safepickup while maintaining physical distancing.
Make sure that you adjust your pickup proceduresto meet the recommendations of health officials in your region.
Keep a safe distance between you and the customer.
You can ask your customer to leave their orderconfirmation and identification on their car.
Then, have your customer step back to maintainphysical distance while you check that the identification and order name match.
Leave the package on the doorstep, sidewalk, or curb, and have your customer pick it up after you’re at a safe distance.
Handle the package and ID with medical gloves, and wash your hands after every interaction.
