they go hi yaoi squid and that was when I knew Hong Kong would changed my life forever but first let's rewind a bit Vancouver 1997 I was born to a Chinese immigrant family my mom came from Malaysia and my dad came from Hong Kong growing up Hong Kong
culture was big in my life I learned Cantonese I ate dim sum and I watched every Bruce Lee movie that ever existed as much as I could say I grew up with Hong Kong culture though it was a very westernized version of at home I spoke English a
mixture between Chinese and English ma did you both say I think I'm gonna cook some guns in it trying to pull my so right now and I don't know what to do I only ever knew what dim sum dishes looked like and never my name because my family
would always order them for me and I couldn't fully understand Hong Kong movies unless I had English subtitles so you're telling me Bruce Lee wasn't say water this whole time I'm very much a Chinese Canadian having to balance two cultures in my life and I love it but
recently I noticed that the balance was off I felt I'd lost touch with my Chinese Hong Kong side and I needed to change that so I packed my bags and for the very first time headed to the mother mine I've arrived in Hong Kong [Music] during my one
week in Hong Kong one of my goals was to experience the culture as much as possible and to do so I challenged myself to only speak Cantonese for an entire week to see if this was even possible I asked my friend Rachel to prep me before my trip
we're gonna go on I'm gonna say that English and Jason is gonna attempt to speak it in Cantonese let's do it I don't say hello like in general hello on the phone wait wait thank you I thought that working going on long time no see hello mochi good
morning I think once it's the actual conversation though it's different because now it's like okay saying I'm going going to one yeah okay [Laughter] we've arrived in Hong Kong and it is time to start the challenge but I'm really tired so we're gonna consider this day zero of
the challenge we're in lamb white foam right now lkf it's a cool little area some cool bars good place to chill and so let's go chill and meet some friends that definitely know Hong Kong a little bit more than me Joe's andhaka come yet know the hiya doc

no they sing some you got some yeah he don't hae Joo Jung Jung Joo Joo Jung I turn fun anyway no that's I got seasick eating dim sum I was reminded how incredibly important food was to Hong Kong culture so it was only natural that we decided to
embark on a food crawl daily [Music] [Music] Judy's a jar that you got high fat got sick guidance I don't condone anything play neither tell a joke dumb wha sick photobomb beating Hong Kong food was a sensory experience every time many dishes I had never tried before like
this steamed milk pudding which blew my mind with how good it was and many other dishes I had grown up eating in Vancouver for me eating these familiar dishes in particular gave me a weird sense of confirmation confirmation on whether my upbringing in Vancouver was authentic to Hong
Kong or not at least in terms of what I ate and thinking about it now I can see why Vancouver carries the nickname Hong Coover but of course eating Hong Kong dishes in Hong Kong cooked by Hong Kong chefs with the Hong Kong atmosphere it is a totally
unique experience on its own and is definitely irreplaceable [Music] de dépôt root Dada other than the food it was of course the streets of Hong Kong that was up next in our venture ladies market is a classic tourist spot in Hong Kong it sells all kinds of different
Goods and souvenirs and nearby is the gold fish market where pet fish are on display on the street as well as other pet essentials he debating wasicsko [Music] widow hi warm come son charm my boy my demo ding-ding for the yellow [Music] the malls in Hong Kong all
have their own unique twist and offers everything that money can buy they go more high Harbor City near her go joy I go home little Mike come go tonight Oh China Nick Tom Judy table come no Utah tech for the dyno Hong Kong have I no no I
can't I hey-ho Tyga coming hi Samia no TJ hi Hollywood Oh Hank I know you got your gun to one sequence on Zito butai I giggles you know few typos churn behind you go make the horchata this was my first time traveling solo I didn't have any friends
to rely on just myself and because of that I felt more the present especially at daiquan Center for heritage and part where I randomly had a conversation with an older next I hit up mon po temple built in 1847 and filled with lamps and hanging incense coils I
found it fascinating that this traditional temple was situated in the middle of the urban and modern city and two of exact Hong Kong Road cool antiques fill up the storefronts here and further down is upper last car row or cat Street as some may call it where you
can find small trinkets souvenirs and other interesting items as the day ended I met up with a few friends to ride Hong Kong's electric tram for the first time so that you got charged 80 no it's not this you know that you got cha team 10 [Music] the
tram door hit me as I entered it but that wasn't really a problem the real problem was nori to make gold it's Anwar know you're enjoying Mahna Mahna is a red dot on the side know that you got high nigga oh my god so that nobody oh no
no that you got high where I fail the challenge I spoke English I think once I start speaking Cantonese I can't express my life so it's just like I become dull would not complex yeah we don't hide I had a large enough Cantonese vocabulary to get by but
it wasn't near a level that allowed me to express complex or even ordinary ideas and thoughts speaking purely Cantonese was also hard when almost all of Hong Kong used and understood English the locals they would literally detect my accent and start speaking English to me since I only
had a limited time in Hong Kong I didn't want this challenge to ruin my experience my mood as well as my ability to talk to you the audience so I decided to strategize a new point no Londo my young young man hi young doggy going on wha come
to Hawaii sigue sigue the in-law hey ho tiger come here hi Hong Kong guys say yeah no you got to knock me out Shawn I hope for you Shawn oh hi Gilda how you gon win box and Wacha sequence you see you on door code oh hey why
you're a Ghanaian come no they come ya gong young man whoa yeah because both are Cantonese spirit airport yeah so right now we're gonna go eat at a congee shop so right now in the shop and their menus completely Chinese and so he get shocked to read a
little bit but I got really traditional so diesem home for the past few days I've been mainly trying to speak Cantonese I felt that this is what it feels like to be like immigrant and another country if you know the basic language you can speak a little bit
a little bit but you can never like fully express yourself now I know the struggle that maybe a lot of international students feel sometimes they can be seen as timid or shy but maybe it's because of the language oh yeah we're lucky because in Vancouver is pretty asian
but even despite having a huge Asian population you know more Asian as Western society Outsiders for many of us of Asian sense that grew up in for example yeah in both of our cases we tend to prison identity crisis we are looking for an extended period of time
in why not it also will don't feel fully Chinese so yeah it is give us this unique hyphenate identity we're like stuck right in the middle I think a lot of us were conflicted about our identity because we don't want to own up to that – an identity
it's not one or the other we're our own identity now you don't have to be only Chinese or only Canadian why can't we see ourselves as Chinese Canadian right how do the best of both worlds yes right we can serve as a bridge for both cultures in that
sense anything that's a very odd creature aspect other than the obvious language barrier there are a few moments that reminded me that I was very much a foreigner we like set up shop on top of stairs yeah bedrooms that you can rent in Hong Kong since twenty one
thousand per month they give it a Curt exchange rate it's almost four thousand containers holy shake it's so much stuff in here so how did these noodles get except for this weird ass I like it I've no idea yeah you can have it disgusting oh my god I've
always been interested in the concept of legacy handing something down from the past modern day Hong Kong in itself is the legacy of the opium wars British colonialism and the resilience of the Hong Kong people movies are of course another way of leaving behind a legacy and that
is especially true for Hong Kong movies so I went to pay tribute to those that I grew up with mic check mic check right now we are in Hong Kong the garden of stars were a lot of Hong Kong me saying Hong Kong celebrities have imprinted their hands
into these blocks but actually below us is something similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame that avenue of stars yeah sing going guys o sanjaya it is under construction right now so I can't go there but [Music] the garden of stars is good enough for me I also
spent a day exploring my family's legacy in Hong Kong which was my grandparents Memorial and grape stone carving business I spent a whole day discovering my family's history exploring a more local side of Hong Kong and talking to the current owners of the business it was an emotional
experience connecting with my family roots and because there's so much to see and discuss I dedicated a whole video to it link is in the description and also remind you at the end of this video it was my last day in Hong Kong and I wanted to end
off my trip with something new something that not everyone thinks of when they come to Hong Kong I decided to go watch horse-racing slight problem I was gonna go to the Satine racecourse for horse racing but it seems like there's not much time before my flight so I
don't know I don't know man it's kind of sketch right now okay horse racing it's okay yeah gives you no time alright maybe come back every year I'll just go do that yeah I just watch it on TV yeah watching it on TV was not the same we
were going no matter one come yet I know joy how yunhai her gonna yeah no hi sake much her hi palma this is your first time seeing a horse race Shawn it is excited are you saying stuff yeah Holly ever [Music] [Music] disclaimer no modo teen time video

in Hong Kong so that was my seventh day my last day I just want to give a final big shout out to my friend Sean right here come feed me for the past four days in Hong Kong showed me around so thank you my man no worries man
I was safe trip back to Vancouver and I'll see you there I'll see you in Vancouver my man he's out he's wait there's actually one more thing I did that I want to show you you guys go team look we're going to the peak which is the top
of Hong Kong where we got to see the skyline and words let's go into the charity videos more moving so back to what I said in the beginning Hong Kong changed my life I saw a reflection of myself in the city a mixture between the East and the
West a life of modernity as well as the respect for the traditional we all have different sides to us and instead of embracing one of them we should embrace all of them because that's what makes us special and I believe it's what made this city what it is
