do you want to learn all the basic HTMLyou need for SEO then stick around hi my name is Simon Elkjær and today I'm goingto teach you the fundamentals of HTML needed to do great SEO I have split itinto 3 sections and I have made a sticky comment below
so it can skipbetween these sections if you want to but first I want to drop some basic HTMLand knowledge on you there's a some semantics you need to know in HTML weuse the words tag an attribute and an element this is an example of a HTMLtag there's usually
two HTML tags in an element except for line break images anda few other and this is an example of an attribute tags and elements getsconfused a lot and mixed together so it's not important to know thedistinction I would say that the word element is not even used in
the SEOworld so just remember the HTML tag and the HTML attribute let's go down tosection 1 : basics even though these are the basic of HTML tags these are likemost maybe the most important you need to know to do great on-page SEOnumber one is the title tag this
might be the most important tag in all of SEOand to know in HTML the title tag is the headline Google uses when you rank onGoogle the Google SERP of the Google SERP in 99% of the cases look at thisexample this is where you need to focus on getting
it right you want all of theusers to click on your URL because what doesn't even matter to rank number onetwo or three if no one feels the need to click on your URL a big part of Google'srankings today is decided by an AI called rank rain and it
monitors howusers through interacts with your page in the rankings this means that if noone clicks on your URL then eventually you'll end up losing the rankings aswell in old-style SEO you would learn to always keep the main keywordyou're focused keywords in the beginning of your title text and
maybe evenmentioning it at least twice today it is much more important to match the usersintent for example if they want to get some information on the subject thentell them do you have the best information on this subject if they wantto purchase something then tell them you are able
to sell them this is somethingthe title element or the title tag as mostly known resides in the head elementof your web page number two is the meta description or meta tag as it's calledit's a tag with the name attribute that equals description and whatever you'reright inside the content
attribute is your meta description this is the twothree or even four lines that goes beneath your title in the Google searchengine result page whereas Google uses the title tag maybe 99% of the time theyare much more likely to not use your meta description if they feel like itbut
it is best practice to still write a great Meta Description especially forthe sake of the users to let them know what they can expect of your content andwhy they need to click on your page and number three these are the header tagsor actually elements but let's just stick
with the text as an SEO contentcreator this part is quite important for you to know on a web page you have aheadline called the h1 this is your main subject for a page best practice is toonly have one h1 on a web page even though Google saved it
it does notmatter how many eight ones you have on that web page it matters the header textgoes from one and through to six and you the best practice is to use them as ahierarchy following a h1 tag you can do as many h2 tags as you want to
but thisshould be subjection of the h1 tag following the h2 text you can do as manyh3 text as you want to but it should also be like a subjection for the parenth2 tag think of header text as follows on acomputer inside the h1 folder there is a number
of h2 folders and inside the h2folders there's a number of h3 folders and then again inside all the h3 folderstairs and number of h4 folders and so on down to h6 if you think of theconstant like this likes folders on your computer then you have a better timeunderstanding
that you can't just jump from h1 and straight to h6 because youfeels like it or because it looks better in your constant theme or whatsoeverthis is not the right structure for a content and it is impossible to do oncomputers so don't do this keep the right structure to
make it easier forGoogle to understand your content number four is the image tags if you want toinsert an image via HTML you do it via an image tag all websites that has animage and it uses this image tag if you use WordPress Wix or a whatsoever thistag is
generated through their editor there is two attributes on an image tagthat I want you to get familiar with the first one is the SRC your image there's no evidence that thefolders of where your image resides has anything to do with SEO but the imagefile name itself could be
one key factor to its you make sure to name if I filedprobably and to optimize the image for faster load speed this could be doneeasily with software online services like a KRAKEN or SHORTPIXEL and so onthe other attribute I want you to get familiar with is the alt
of the altattribute it's short for alternate and it'sdesigned for two purposes if the images does not load then the alternate textshowed and for accessibility then screen readers will and other tools for theotherwise able will read this text out loud if this does not compel you todescribe your image
and then note that Google actually use this all takes tworank your image and image SEO is very underused we have a client who gets athousands of 1000 visitors every month through Google image search so do notskip this part if you want all the traffic you can get number
5 is the onpage a link building last in the basic sections of HTML you need to know to dogreat SEO is a very important tag it's the link tag this is how you create linkthis is how every link on the Internet is created this is structured a littlebit
different than the image tag and there is two attributes I want you toremember you have the possibility to throw almost all kinds of comes andinside this element and then close it again for example you can make an imageor a whole block of content clickable let's just stick with
the SEO point ofview and there is two attributes I want you to learn the first is called thehref attribute and the other one is the title attribute and many people skip thetitle attribute for some reason the href attribute tells the browser where tolead the user when you click
the link this is where you put in yourdestination so for internal link building you put in the URL you want tolink to the title attribute gives you the possibility to describe what thepage you are linking to is all about Google actually uses in this informationbut a lot of
people forget to put in something in the title attribute betweenthe first a tag and the closing a tag is where you write what is going to be yourclickable link if it's internal link building you do want to include the mainkeyword that you want your destination page to rank
on and also make sure youdescribe why the users need to click this link because we want the chromeuser data to see that it's trafficked link so instead of just linking throughthe board car then try to create a link saying click this link to see the entireselections of our
cards available right now this is it for the first of thethree sections in this video remember if you like this type of content to makesure and subscribe and hit that Bell button one of these days I plan to do avideo of me creating an entire SEO friendlymobile-first website
from scratch using only HTML CSS and only using three toolsdon't miss this part subscribe now and now for a section number two is theadvanced SEO text that you could do to make and greater impact on SEO I'm goingto like do this a little bit faster than the first
five tips because each ofthese texts would require me to do an entire video about them just to makesure it's done properly I'm going to mention it and then we can I'm talking alittle bit about what it's all about the first one is the canonical tag it'sa tag residing
inside the head element of your web page it's a tag for tell youto if it's a copy of another page that you rather want Google to see so if forexample you have a list post or a page let's say it's an category in yourecommerce store so if you
have the this category maybe has like a text in thetop maybe some maybe also text button and then you have a list of products ifthis list has the possibility to click on which to the next page and this pagecould also have the same title and the same attributes
and the same content onit then you don't actually want people to rank this you want to tell Googlewhat is the main page for this concert this is where I put in the canonical tagin your header there's much more uses for it and it's just actually I wouldsay one
of the dangerous text to use if you don't know what are you doingbecause if you put it in wrong then you could remove a page from the index thenwe have a number seven in the entire listit's called markup or schema markup or structured data there this is and
thisis an entire new universe into SEO too it's it's basically a way to markup somepart of your content on your web page to tell Google what this actually is itcould be tomorrow this is my phone number this is my email address this ismy name and I am the
CEO of the company this is my this is my LinkedIn profilethis is my facebook profile this is my company addresses and so on and so onthere's like almost like endless but there's hundreds maybe maybe near eventhousands of texts to do this correctly one thing you should really be
doing ifyou have a block it is to do an author page for you to describe who you are andgo into details on maybe your your story and then you can say okay this part ismy name this part is my phone number this part is my LinkedIn profile this
ismy facebook profile this is my Twitter profile and so on and if you have acompany page and then you should do on the about page a section for this is theorganization name and this is the company address this is the phone numberthis yeah all of these basic information
you should do this just to betransparent with Google and Google also like like to get all these informationbecause it makes you more a credible source or a credible website Google cangather all these data by themselves if they are smart enough on your webpagebut by providing it via structured
data then you are sure that Google can readthis probably if you have an e-commerce store then it's great for you to on yourproduct page to say this is my product name this is my price this is myavailability this is my stock account and this is my ratings and
so on some ofthese informations are sometimes showed in the Google search engine result pagefor example you have seen the Stars or the ratings underneath something this isdone via schema markup and structured data number eight in the list is metatag called robots and it is also what right like
one of the dangerous tags tobe using but you should know this tag if you have a webpage that does not getindexed and you might have the tag robot sets set to noindex this is a tag wherein your head element to say to Google I do not want this
page to get indexnormally this is only used like when you have a development environment and youare creating a new website and you don't wantGoogle to crawl it before it's done but yeah you shouldn't really be messingaround with the robots tag if you are not 100% sure what you're
doing andnumber nine we have the link alternate tag inside the header it's also quiteadvanced attack to implement correctly and I've only seen it a couple of timesdone really really correct so it's like if you have a web page and you have theexact same content in in let's say
German English Spanish and maybe Italianor Danish then you could sell Google via this HTML tag inside your head that thisis my Danish URL this is my English URL this is my German this is my Italian andso on and you can also tell Google what the default URL would
be so this isquite good if you have a multiple of languages because then there's an actualpossibility to get rankings and ranked authority from another domain let's sayyou have the German website on something in German de and you have the Englishwebsite on something in English come and then you
have something in English thatI T for de Italia then all these domains is actually like a new property inGoogle's eyes but you can connect them beer this alternate or H hreflang checkthis was it for the Advanced section I might do a video for each of them toshow examples
on how to use these tags correctly and then now let's go on tothe section I would like to call extra because there is no real evidence thatthis section actually helps anything with SEO but I would say that whyshouldn't it help with SEO because some of the improves usability
and some of itis just a correct way of doing HTML so it's easier to read the HTML elements sofor the total list we are at number 10 and it's text styling so you could dobolded text you could do emphasis on text like there it's Alec styleit's called and
you have on the line and so on there's no real evidence that thishelps in SEO but you power actually doing a better user experienceby building some important text and do emphasis and so on so I would say likethe greater usability and user experience would it's also like a
greatSEO optimization for the stretch and the next one the 11th on the list is atblockquote so if you this is I actually think thatthis is a real SEO thing that if you are doing quotes from another website thenmake sure to put it in to the element called the
block quote so if you havelike a big citation from some website then Google might say that you havecopied them but instead if you do it inside this block world and you use thesite attribute C ite attribute to say where the source is from then you put inthe link
say I'm signing this source so you're actually telling Google and whenthey crawl your content this is M this is a quote from this page I'm notcopying I'm just quoting I would also still make sure to not quote more thanlike two or three lines of text just to make
sure that Google does not thinkthat you are copying them and number twelve on the list is an element calledand nav element in AV is an actually and navigation so let's say for all webpages almost on the entire sand you have a menu or a navigation to like getaround
on the web page you could do this via number of ways you could use this todo a list of links buttons and so on but you could put all of this inside the navthe nav element and this has been widely spreads out to be used normally by thebootstrap
and some other of these boilerplate HTML templates but byputting your navigation inside the nav element I would bet that Google has a aneasier way of telling that okay the this group of links it could be actually somebig website could have hundreds of links inside their menu and this
is a way totell Google this is my navigation this is not that man comes and this is thenavigation and you one Google to be able to understand yourwebsite easier one thing I do that I don't think the rest of the world do butI don't know if it works
but I still do it is that I've in the codeI put the navigation at the bottom and then via CSS styling I put it in the topor where it's supposed to be because I want Google to read my h1 and my maincomes in first via the HTML and
I want the users to get the menu at the top orat the bottom if it's where it has to be number 13 and the list is data tablesand there is actually some evidence that if you do lists like list items a tabletables then for some search queries or
some search intents this makes it easierfor you to get the featured snippet so for example if you do going for reviewsor comparisons of some data then you will actually need a data table to dothis comparison table probably after Google Bert's where the update whereGoogle just don't just read
the content like from A to C and they read it likefrom all the sort of angles to understand it all I think that datatables and list items and so on God and much deserved boost inside Googlesearches and the next one on the list list number 14 is list
items it could belike number at lists or on or it lists items I think that in it not only helpsyour user to understand and read the content faster but it also would helpsome in SEO but this is just I guess and number 15 is just like the number
12it's the footer element it's – so Google this is my footer this is the bottom ofall my page so this is not a part of my main content you could put all of thisinside a footer element there's no evidence that this might work of this iteven does a
difference in Google but this is just easier for Google ifGoogle's would crawl it just as main HTML then Google could say okay this ismy navigation this is my footer and Harrison data table so by using all ofthese like standardized HTML instead of doing some jump through hoops and
do allsort of styling crazy then this is just a standard the easyway of Google to understand what it content is all about and as I saidearlier I am doing a video later on where I'm going to create an entirewebsite from scratch using just HTML and CSS and freeze
tools so make sure tosubscribe and like this video comment below if you agree or disagree with methat these extra HTML elements could actually help SEO by providing a betteruser experience this was it for today my name is Simon L here makes you tosubscribe and I will hopefully see
you soon in the comments below bye bye
