[Not Just Games] The true story behind Rainbow Six's Operation Shifting Tides

Welcome to Episode 92 of Not Just Games.

I am Joey.

We're now at the final episode of the quarterlynew operator show for Rainbow Six.

This year, Rainbow Six's final season is OperationShifting Tides.

They added two operators from Kenya and India and a purely fictional private mercenary faction, “NIGHTHAVEN”.

Purely fictional? How am I supposed to talk about it then? Then this marks the end of this episode ofNot Just Games.

Last season, Ubisoft created APCA, a privateparamilitary archaeological organization.

This time, they created one with a logo similarwith SHD's Marine Division, NIGHTHAVEN.

I wonder why Ubisoft did not base it on theSecret Service in real life.

As such, I will tell you all about these twooperators and their country's Special Forces.

India When I searched about the Special Forces ofIndia, I saw these and realized that something waswrong.

India is undoubtedly a capable country.

So I wondered if the advertisers were talkingbad about India because they wanted to garner attention.

Until I made some research and realized the reason why Ubisoft would be more willingto create their own unit than to mention the Special Forces of India.

Currently, the most elite Special Forces ofIndia is the National Security Guard also known as Black Cats.

In June 1984, Indian Prime Minister IndiraGandhi, in order to remove the religious leader ofthe Sikhs and his followers out of their holy temples, initiated “Operation Blue Star”.

These religious followers resisted and foughtwith the military, but they failed in the end.

Their leader was killed, while the followerswere all caught and banished.

But there were a lot of Sikh followers inIndia, including troops, police and other government officers.

The attack against the Sikhs triggered theirdissatisfaction and planted the seed of hatred.

Until October that year, Prime Minister Indira was assassinated byher two Sikh bodyguards.

This further worsened the civil war in Indiaand major conflicts occurred.

When everything was over, the Indian Ministryof Home Affairs, at the end of 1984, following SAS and GSG9, founded the National Security Guard.

They are there to protect the country andits people and defeat terrorists.

These Special Forces soldiers wear all blackuniforms and a black cat insignia, hence the name “BlackCats”.

Their framework is rather complete.

In the National Security Guard, there is aSpecial Action Group (SAG), Special Rangers Group (SRG), Special CompositeGroup (SCG) and the National Bomb Data Centre (NBDC).

There are nearly 2, 300 people and the dropout rate is about 70%.

Their equipments are also supported by thecountry.

Weapons like night vision devices can be bought.

All in all, they look pretty decent.

At the beginning, the record of the BlackCats were not bad.

After around 10 years, they successfully appeased many conflictsand terrorist attacks from the Sikhs in India.

But for some reason, from their record, itcan be seen that after 1999 things began to go downhill for the BlackCats.

In December 1999, an Indian airplane was hijacked.

Because the higher ups were slow with theirapprovals, the Black Cats could not arrive in time and the hijacked plane actually took off.

This event caused the death of a hostage.

India had no choice but to accept the terrorists'terms and release their captured comrades.

To allow the terrorists to gain the upperhand and escape was something rare.

In 2002, the Black Cats went to pursue smugglers, but due to the lack of information, a hostage was killed.

In the same year, two militants raided a templebut the Black Cats were caught in Delhi's traffic.

In the end, a teammate died in action whileanother was heavily injured.

The true fall of their reputation was during the hijack of Mumbai Hotel in 2008.

When the hotel was rampantly raided by manymilitants, if it were the English or French Special Forces, they would've reached the scene to controlthe situation immediately.

Yet the Indian Government did not notice thisuntil the attack took place 90 minutes later.

The police couldn't deal with this, so theyneeded the Black Cats.

But when the Black Cats received their orders, they discovered a problem.

They did not have a plane, so they needed to be shifted.

After they are shifted, they will fly thereslowly, and head to the scene with a bus, just likea tourist.

By the time they arrived, the attack had tookplace for nearly 10 hours.

Everyone, think about this.

What kind of quality is a Special Forces unitwhen they only arrive 10 hours later? If it wasn't because these militants weresuicidal and didn't plan on leaving this place alive, if they were meticulous schemers they wouldhave left after attacking.

The worst part is that when the Black Cats were trying to besiegethe hotel, because they didn't have the hotel's layout, they were puzzled about the whole attack.

They didn't know where the terrorists were, how many of them were there nor the firepower they possessed.

The confrontation lasted for almost 3 daysbefore they rushed in hastily.

Two NSG commandos and nearly 200 civiliansdied due to this attack.

Finally, they barely managed to appease thesituation.

Mumbai's attack woke India up from their dreamof a great country.

It exposed their country's immense securityflaws.

The Black Cats' performance also caused Indiato lose face in front of global media and become Sick Black Cats.

After this incident, the Black Cats fell intototal collapse.

In 2016, their Lieutenant Colonel failed todefuse a bomb and caused it to go off, killing himself andinjuring 12 other members in the process.

In conclusion, the Black Cats' battle capacity went downhilland their performances were gradually getting worse.

As compared to Team Rainbow and other forcesof great strength, Ubisoft found it better to create their ownfictional troop.

Kenya is situated at the east of Africa.

The position of this country and its economycan be considered as acceptable.

But beside it is Somalia, which is one of the worst country on thisplanet.

Thus, Kenya's dream of peaceful days are difficultto come true.

Somalia's militants will occasionally disruptthe peace in Kenya, causing a headache for Kenya.

Luckily, both the US and UK despise Somaliatoo.

So they provided Kenya with the appropriateweapons to resist Somalia.

This caused the weapons of Kenya's SpecialForces to become interesting.

It had a feeling of a low level player obtaining a legendary weapon due to makingin-app purchases or through a lucky draw.

Our Kenyan operator is from the Kenya SpecialBoat Unit.

This Special Boat Unit was personally foundedby the US Special Operations Command maritime unit.

They were really hands-on.

Because of this Kenya Special Boat Unit, those Kenyans can scatter around with thoseAKs on land, but 80% of them have never even been on aboat.

They had to rely on the US army to teach themmaritime operations, swimming, ship maintenance, medical science, boardingand so on.

They even invited 27 people to conduct sixweeks of professional training.

All that the US is hoping for is that later they can help them in containing Somalia'srampant pirate activity.

Aside from forming this Special Boat Unit, Kenya also made some Special Forces for land, such as the General Service Unit Recce SquadCompany.

This unit was trained in the UK, US and Israel, but their current numbers are not good.

Everyone can see that their weapons are merelyaids.

These expressions of vigor and happiness showthat they must've just gotten their new boots.

Speaking of which, I have something interestingto say on this.

On January 2018, Kenya was once again attackedby Somalia.

At that time, this squad company and localpolice surrounded the hotel.

But they were still helpless against theseterrorists with bombs.

At this moment, a masked big shot in a uniformwalked past and rushed in alone.

He fought, and brought out quite a numberof hostages.

This action shocked the Kenyan soldiers.

They then mustered up their courage and followedhim.

From this, we can see that the combat power of the world class SpecialForces is shocking.

Meanwhile, due to the continuous help of thisbig shot, Kenya managed to stand out from the rest of itsAfrican counterparts and were chosen by Ubisoft to join part ofthe game, Rainbow Six.

The two new operators for this season's OperationShifting Tides, to be honest, based on the past few seasonsthis year, do you all feel like Rainbow Six is gettingmore and more difficult to make? Rainbow Six: Siege started from its CQB Basics.

But due to the continuous updates and limitationsby the gameplay and setup, the abilities of the operators become moreand more absurd and fictional.

But they also had to take into account balanceand e-sports, causing the operators to become more and moredifficult to make while the map is continuously revamped.

For the two new operators this time, it feelas as if they figured out their abilities first before they figured out the character.

Then, they forcefully combined them.

There are no longer iconic operators likebefore where the character and their abilities complementeach other.

The Indian Attacker, Kali, got her name from the Goddess of Time, Kali.

She represents power and new birth and isone of the stronger and fiercer Indian gods.

It is a symbol of Kali as she carries a bolt-actionsniper rifle when she attacks.

But the performance of this rifle in actualbattle is unsatisfactory.

Although its firepower is great and it can even pierce through walls, but its fault rate is rather low.

Especially for a game like Rainbow Six wherethere are a lot of indoor CQB battles, if it wasn't for this plane's layout, theadvantages of the bolt-action is not much.

So when you miss, you're basically done for.

Although you can switch between scopes of5x or 12x, there is no thermal scope.

Although its great power can resist electrics, but after you fire, the trajectory becomesobvious and it'll lean more toward your camping position.

Its sudden attack cannot be compared withGlaz's.

What is odd is that this gun will shoot outa huge hole in the wall but it cannot pierce through steel bars.

Her bolt-action CSRX 300 rifle is fictional, but I presume that it is of the same caliberas The Shadow Trax8.

The special feature of this series of sniperrifles is that its a precision guided gun.

External equipments can be used to provideshooters with various shooting parameters.

Basically, it is as if an in-game gun is broughtout to reality as the wind direction, marking, horizontaltilts, etc.

This allows shooters to use high tech scopesto get a better aim at their target.

Of course, the price of this gun also fitswell with Kali's style of a wealthy operator.

Kali's operator ability is based on her sniperrifle which is also equipped with an under-barrel launcher.

She can clear the area and most importantly, pierce through reinforcedwalls to destroy electric Wifi boxes and other equipments.

But this lance cannot destroy Black Mirror, so it is a loophole for the Defenders.

But it is better to not attack through thewalls.
