The Phantom: The Card Game Preview (rundown)

hey everybody today righto previews a prototype of the phantom of the card game but before I get going please turn your subtitles on to the Klingon channel so that when I make rules groups you don't know what they are and if you've done that then welcome to bengali

which is a fictional african country that is the stomping grounds for the phantom which interesting trivia bit is arguably the first costume superhero in literary or comic book history and today we are gonna be having some phantom style adventures although i will not be playing as the phantom

today i am playing as diane who is the Phantom's longtime love interest and a very capable heroine on her own right and in fact i'm he's shown how that works because this game comes with three different adventures all three of them are based on classic stories from the

comic series from over the various years and of the three i could have chosen this one just a whole bunch of cards it has to do with you know being introduced to his trusty sidekick wolf or i could have gone with this one which is the deepest heaviest

of all of them because it has branching storylines and all that kind of stuff this is about him trying to literally break up a slaver ring and i thought that was maybe a little bit too heavy for her now so instead of playing the fans are doing one

of those adventurers i am gonna be playing as diane as she joins the jungle patrol which is based on a storyline from the 70's and i'm a little ways into the adventure already because i have one thing i found playing all three of these adventures they all start

off pretty slow you haven't really developed a lot of resources yet and the first few rounds are really just kind of getting your footing you know building up towards big stuff i wanted to get right to the big stuff to show you just how deep and rich this

game gets so i am right now just about to defeat these poachers this was Diana's second job having joined the jungle patrol to shut these poachers down and with the help of her fellow officer in the jungle Pedroso Baba she was able to put it into them once

and for all and that was part two of the jungle patrol and as it says if the poachers defeated read part three so you are just jumping in I'm a little ways in we're currently she has a flesh wound and she's got a shoulder injury previously she's taken

a leg injury and a head injury as well but she does have she's got her black belt her patrol uniform her rifle she can pull on a salary when she needed she's still got zubaba to help her out and she's also a novice the old karate kick no

alrighty he'll be out cold for a while so as the instructions say when you defeat the poachers read number three and so we're gonna move on to the third and final chapter of this particular adventure so we're kind of jumping midway in with a bunch of stuff already

on the go and what's the situation well she captured the poachers working relationships are in danger your fellow soldiers start making passes at you this is actually part of Diana's history she has always been all the way back in the thirties an incredibly capable um you know character

excelling at anything but she always has to deal with you know sexism and misogyny and stuff like that so it's in the comics it's in the game so she gets reassigned to a soda bar and after a short time the Harbormaster comes to her with suspicions of smugglers

so she or I and Jennings another agent have to go and investigate the claim so there's a few steps we're gonna set up to get going on the third chapter first of all Jennings gets put into her discard pile and so we'll be able to call on him

a little bit later and remove the poachers the poachers are gone they have been defeated a bye bye and shuffle carts 19 through 34 so these are all the destiny cards that we might have to deal with need to shuffle him up we don't know what destiny has

in store for us as we try to investigate these smugglers alright so the destiny deck is set up and place the Diana on jungle patrol and put that into place so all these adventures have multiple difficult hills I could if I'm really brave I could play on heroic

I'm not doing that today I'm not playing on easy either though I am playing on normal so this is my set up for the third and final chapter so because I'm playing on normal all enemies that I will face while trying to break up the smuggling REME have

+1 hit point so I map to him you know get them a little bit harder and if there's at least one enemy in the result file taking out one bad guy the evidence is in play which I've got to find it's somewhere in this deck and there are

no enemies currently active then I can complete this mission and so different missions have different you know sometimes you're trying to find certain things sometimes you're having to beat bosses all kinds of stuff depending on which storyline you're going through and so this one gotta find the evidence

got to take down the smugglers okay and we are now ready to go and like I said I'm just jumping in so I've already gotten a you're not having to watch the slow building up you know this mission literally starts with her still in training trying to get

accepted into the jungle patrol so she has to take exams and stuff like that so I just got to the big action part you know the big finale okay so how does it work well we've got a little summary right here that walks us through I should have

zoomed in on that all these steps that we will go through first every round there is a recovery phase where I have a choice and Diane has to make this choice right now she can either heal already all of her cards you'll notice from the big fight I

had I'd actually used my patrol uniform which kind of represents the the connections I have with jungle patrol to get zubaba out of my my discard pile so I could put him into play because he gave me that extra point of damage I need so that's why they

are still tapped and so I've got a choice I can either untap them so they're at the ready and you can imagine that's me once again establishing connection with you know HQ or finding out where did so Bob ago you know I've lost track of him after all

the you know because you know or instead of untapping them I can eliminate all of the wound cards I have accumulated and these will build up and it is possible I'm currently suffering from a shoulder injury if I get a second shoulder injury I lose instantly so if

I don't get rid of this I could I it's a big danger I've also got a flesh wound but all I have to get three of these so I'm not so worried about the flesh wound I'd have to you know have a little bit of bad luck to

be able or to to run afoul of that and that means drawing more cards from this damaged deck I think I would rather get my resources back and I will just hope hope hope that um I avoid another shoulder injury that could instantly lose it okay so that

is a situation I have done my recovery phase and now if we come back over here I've got my destiny phase play the next destiny card then I am going to prepare to deal with my destiny then I'll have adventures and then fate will play out and finally

at the end of the round I'll clean up and I'm just gonna keep on doing this until I either die or I successfully shut down these smugglers alrighty so the destiny phase we'll find out what our first destiny card is shuffled up and it is innocent bystanders there

are innocent bystanders in the area as you can see this is taking art from the original comic strips from the original comic books alright so while innocent bystanders in play I cannot use my weapon so my rifle here that is very very useful it's basically taken offline now

to to deal with this I could tap one of my allies and my allies would get these bystanders out of here my Ally is Obama right now he's my only one I've got so um and let's see actually these comes out I now have to play another destiny

card so this is just taking up space another destiny awaits and it is Oscar this is one of the smugglers and I imagine it's a smuggler from the original comic book here or the keys Oscar don't try so fast you can stop by please haha says parrot who

is the big guy I'm trying to take out he's the leader of the smugglers so Oscar has three plus one so he has four total hit points and if I don't take him out every round during the fete phase I will have to draw an injury card and

well how many cards do I still have in here one two three four five six there is a one in six chance that Oscar will kill me if I draw the other shoulder injury if I draw another flesh wound no big deal if I draw the head injury

no big deal but if I draw the shoulder injury so this is a problem and it's an even bigger problem because of the ends of bystanders I can't use my rifle to take him out I could try to fight him but I'd have to do 4 points of

damage so that's my situation I got a deal with right now and now we go on to the prep phase where we draw cards equal to our hand limit and my hand limit is 3 by default so I got one two three cards and now this is a

deck that I've had since the beginning of this adventure and it was full of standard things you know she's a member of the Union so she can call in her contacts from the UN or she could just take a break and that lets you untap cards um but

I've also got alright yeah this is a basic of mine novice judo throws I do have some upgraded cards that I have earned throughout this adventure that are in here as well in fact one of them is in the mean Jennings just showed up and these binoculars are

an upgraded card that I would like to get back to me and I can get more of these upgraded cards by completing achievements for every one of these three missions there are a set of achievements you can do I have already done the have 6 tokens in place

so I think that's how I got my binoculars and I'm trying to get three martial arts cards into play that'll give me another achievement I haven't seen any hostages if they show up if I save them if I beat ferret who is the leader of the smuggling gang

I'll get an achievement if i disarm a and bomb I'm not playing on heroic or mythic so I'm not gonna get achievements there I also have not done three tests in one I almost did it but I quite I missed that now here's the deal if I complete

any of those I get a random card and that card can either go into my hand to the top of my deck or the draw pile and the interesting thing is that's not a temporary thing Diane will have permanently learned those abilities and the next time I play

a game that I won't have taken all those upgrades out of the deck alright she gets stronger and stronger and that is how I can take on the tougher more heroic level adventures that we go on so there's kind of this clause I what he call it a

campaign mode to the game because your character levels up from game to game to game if you can complete more objectives so anyway so this is something I've got a bare mind I've got one I need to get to more martial arts skill cards into play so I

can complete an achievement so I can get more cool souped-up cards alright and it just so happens one of them showed up the judo throw now every card I draw uh you know after I've drawn them this is a prep phase now I get to the adventure phase

where I can play cards discard cards activate cards in an issue combat every card I've got a choice I could either discard it which means I will get the resources it shows in the top left or top right corner or if I can pay the resources that I

need in this case I need three Chi if I have three cheery sources I could pay them and get the judo throw novice level into play and this would be a power I would have available to me for the rest of the game alrighty so I would like

to do that but I need three chi um now call in the favor from the UN if I discard this I will get a diamond a diamond is a while that means I can take any resource I want I could take you know a chi token or I

could take a skull token or a protection token or a stealth token so it could be anything I want I'm now instead if I had a protection token which is what this is I could put this card into play and in the future I could trash it to

get a human ally and this is a typo this is a prototype of course I should say Ally instead of allied from my discard pile and I could put on top of my deck that would be very handy indeed because Jennings a human ally of mine is you

know okay there are animal allies I can have as the Phantom as well if I could get him to the top of my deck then I know what my top card would be oh that would be very interesting indeed because I would get Jennings into the top and

knowing that he's the top means occasionally you have to do checks and what you do is you draw the top card from your deck you discard it and whatever icons were here those will help you or hinder you depending on what you're trying to do so knowing what

is on the top of my deck is hugely valuable so I would love to do that but to call in a favor from the UN I need a protection token I you I burn through everything I had to take out the poachers that you you know I did

right before they started so I have no resources on hand and you know if I discard the judo throw I'll get some cheap if I discard this break card I'll get a skull and skull resources or what I can use to initiate fights and I need to take

Oscar out because he there's a 1/6 chance he's gonna kill me but the problem is I could discard this which would give me a while to so I could get anything I want I could get the protection token but then I've discarded so I can't put it into

play so that my favorite the UN could get Jennings in place so that I could have a really effective attack okay okay so but I would like to get Jennings queued up yeah that would be that would be perfect in fact yes so here's I'm gonna do previously

on a previous round I had gotten this salary card into play I know I'd had some protection I played it to gets into play now this is just waiting whenever I want I can trash this card for him I discard it and that means I'll do a check

which means I'll draw a card like I said and I will get to draw X cards based on or a certain number of cards and if I can draw the cards I need to be able to play this that'll be perfect so let's go on ahead and trash

my salary card and it says draw the card so I draw show me all right two icons here and remember the salary what this says is hey however many icons there are on the card you jus and there were two icons I get to draw that many more

cards and put them in my hand so that was pretty handy so this is why I drew it gets discarded so I'm not gonna get support from HQ until I go through my deck and it shows up later but now I get to draw two more cards show

me I already forgotten what it was I needed oh yeah show me a protection so I can call in a favor from you in nope it's another Chi and does another skull oh that would have been a perfect plan but I was foiled ah and now HQ won't

even help me anymore alrighty so still I've got a lot more cards and more cards means more options to try to take out Oscar before he gets a chance to take a potshot at me so I still cannot get this favor from the UN in play right what

can I do alrighty umm well okay well here's the thing I can initiate combat as many times as I want and every time I initiate combat there's a little reminder of it over here I get to do one point of damage plus I draw a card and do

more damage based on how many icons so if I had drawn this card when I was trying to fight I would have done 3 points of damage remember I need to do 4 so it wouldn't quite have taken him out normally to be able to initiate combat I

have to have a skull token this that's it's mean use I can spend skull tokens to attack because the skull is actually the source of fear that the phantom strikes in the hearts of all narrow dwells in his you know he wears a big old skull ring and

when he picks people with the ring they become permanently scarred with that skull token so they're marked as evildoers it's all part of the story fiction so that's why skulls are what allow me to attack so I could go on ahead and attack this guy but that's why

when I attack him I want to get Jennings on top because when I draw him I'll know that hey I've got a bonus skull and a crystal here or a diamond here so that means I'll have two more skulls so that means I'll hit really hard hmm yeah

because it's when I draw it I get extra damage based on how many skulls there are and Jennings has one skull and one wild that could be anything like say a skull that's why I wanted to get him into play but I can't drat drat drat alright so

you know if the UN is not gonna help me because I didn't get a protection token that call in the favor I'm gonna go a different way I'm gonna call in a favor from jungle Patrol and that means I'm gonna use my jump my uniform so I tap

this and that means I place a jungle patrol card from my discard pile into my hand and you guessed it Jennings is a jungle patrol card because he's got the little jungle patrol symbol that's unique to this particular adventure so if I can't get Jennings to the top

of my deck I'll just bring him into hand and I will get him to join me and help me fight so now to get him into play I need a skull I need a protection and I need anything you know the diamond always stands for anything it's a

wild so I need three icons to get him into play I still have no resources so let's start getting some resources I will play this break card I'm discarding it to give myself a skull all right so it's gone boom this skull I could use to initiate a

fight with Oscar but um you know and I could even help myself in the fight because zubaba because I connected with him again could give me plus one so I'd be hitting him for at least three but I have to hit him for four so let's hold on

a second so I've got that skull I want to get Jennings into play Jennings needs a protection token so I'm gonna discard this favor I can't sis again to play I'm gonna discard it and since it had a wild card I will get up section token all righty

now I need anything else let's go on ahead and a/c karate-kick you know what I've already got my karate kick and play I've got two of these cards I cannot have two of the same karate kick novice see if I could upgrade to become a karate kick master

then I could replace my novice with master card but I haven't played enough to level Diana up to have that so I'm just gonna discard this that's gonna give me a cheat Oken all right now I've got what I need and Jenkins get in here there is the

skull there's the defense and I'm gonna use this what did I are I should I've started taking a chi token there's the chi token I got so Jennings is in play now putting a card into play doesn't immediately do anything they're just available to me and in most

cases you have to tap them and/or spend resources to do other stuff right okay so I've still got two cards in my hand my judo throw I would love to get this into play but it requires three Chi and I just burned through two Chi the Chi I

had plus the wild card so I'm not gonna get this into play right now it's too expensive which is too bad because that would be awesome this is an awesome power when I do a check instead of the card getting discarded like it goes into my hand but

that's got to wait for later I'm just gonna discard this chi Chi and every round you're gonna have at least three sometimes more cards all of your cards you either want to discard them to build up resources or you want to put them into play because at the

end of the round any cards you didn't play or discard or gonna be lost anyway so and on this break I could get this to play now that I've got this Chi I could spend it cuz I could spend anything to get this break into play and this

allows me to untap an ally or a skill whenever I need it or instead of that I'm gonna discard this and give myself a skull all right I have no more cards in hand but my adventure phase isn't over I have played cards I have discarded cards I

have activated a card but I'm gonna activate some more cards all right because remember the other thing is initiate combat and if I don't take out Oskar there's a one in six chance he'll kill me and it's game over if I draw another shoulder injury so oh shoot

I forgot by the way I forgot by the way while I have this shoulder injury I can't use any weapons so while I could use Jennings or zubaba to get these innocent bystanders out of the way so I could use my rifle unfortunately I'm still suffering from this

shoulder injury so my rifle is useless anyway so I'm gonna bother with that all right so to attack somebody when there are people in the destiny line that have hit points that means they can be attacked and for me to attack this guy I normally well there's a

couple different ways you can do it you can spend a skull to initiate combat or you can spend three diamonds and again diamonds are standing for anything so I could spend any three resources to get a skull to turn into a skull then I could spend that X

call to initiate combat so that's normal the way you do it three of anything to a skull skull starts to combat but but our girls it has a black belt which means if I tap this I can use a chi token um during combat as a skull so

that's really cool that's why I'm very happy to have this because when I attack this will give me an extra event but also remember I'm a karate kick novice if I tap this I can use a chi token to initiate combat so I've got this skull which I'm

gonna be able to use to fight this guy and I've gotta decide what am I gonna do with this chi token either I use my black belt and that means I will do one more point of damage or I don't use the Chi token because since I can

do the karate kick I can use this Chi to initiate an attack as well let's see how it plays out I'm gonna spend this skull and I'm going to attack Oscar there alright and I'm doing one point of damage I draw this card and if there's any skulls

on here I'll do additional and report to HQ this protection protection doesn't help but I'm fighting but this wildcard can be anything I'm gonna say that's a skull so I am doing one two points of damage right now but I've got to do four so um I will

use the black belt to spend this to get me to three points of damage and now either Jennings or zubaba can jump in I will have Jennings jump in and I will oh oh oh you know what no oh man no I'm gonna have Sababa jump in and

that's the fourth point of damage I need to do oscar has been taken out do do do do do-do-do-do-do so he is gone and the innocent bystanders are still here which are preventing me from being able to use weapons because the rifle is another way I could have

gone instead of having to do a fight I could shoot the rifle if I didn't have my shoulder injury and if there weren't innocent bystanders around and what happens is I draw two cards if either of them have a skull I just instantly kill whatever I'm shooting at

no matter how tough they were but when I draw two cards to fire the rifle if I draw it if there are at least two protection symbols on those cards the rifle jams and I have to discard it so it's a bit of a risk to use this

thing but it could just take out super tough guys all right boom I didn't need to do that I my black belt I took him out with a little bit of Chi Oscar is gone now whenever you defeat somebody there's the chance there's the chance I could get

some loot we are right now I'm done with the poachers I just took out was it Oscar one of the lowlifes I could potentially get one more skull as a freebie by looting him so what I have to do is I have to draw another card I have

to do a check and depending on what icons I might get lucky now this gets more powerful the better my deck is the more cool powerful cards I get as I play over and over and over again and get really high-level things in there let's see what I

get I've got okay it's salary it's a single icon and it's a protection icon the loot chart says that no matter what I draw whatever icon is it's worth two since I drew one icon that meant I get nothing loo Fred and Oscar they are their minions they

don't have much if I had draw if the card I drew had five icons on it you know because it two points apiece I would have need to get to nine plus then I would have gotten a skull so it was pretty unlikely because I'm still a relatively

new agent that I didn't you know get you'll find anything on them but again if my deck were full of really high power cards I would add a much better shot at that looting c'est la vie alright so I beaten him I have no more cards to play

but I'm not done yet folks because I will tap Jennings and you know Jennings could have given me plus one in the fight but instead I'm going to him to untap an item card I've got my patrol uniform again I am now going to use my uniform again

to call back to jungle patrol and get another card in my hand any card that's in the discard pile that is you know these cards represent they are Diana cards that's the enn symbol over the Chi symbol for Diana because she's a martial artist but no I I've

got two choices I could get into my hand either the binoculars or mulligan another allied that I could put into play now Mulligan is very expensive I need a defy Jennings before him I would need defense a skull and something else to put him into play he can

help me in a fight and if I tap this I can discard cards and draw cards and I have a bad hand he can give me a better card that's good old Mulligan binoculars I cost two of anything any two resources I could get this into play and

if I tap it I can see what is next in the Destiny deck and if I can see what's next in the Destiny deck I can decide whether I should heal myself or whether I should untap stuff huh but as it is right now unfortunately I'll take you

there one of them I do not have two resources I've burned through all my resources so I can't put them in auctions in play but I'll discard them again and give myself another protection token now at the end of my turn my token limit is 6 if I

was a head over 6 I'd have to discard down I'm just trying to save up so I can do more stuff in the future so that was it um and yeah I am done so we have finished the adventure phase now the Fate phase if there was anybody

in the destiny line that had a heart on them which means they are villains there are bad guys to attack they would attack me now and let's see if they would have killed me let's see one in six chance it was a flesh wound it would have been

my second flesh wound and I could push my luck and hopefully avoid it instead of oh it was almost if I'd drawn the shoulder injury I would have lost but like I said but with judicious use of resources and cards and allies and items I was able to

avoid taking that second shoulder injury so anyway since there's nobody because I took out the one thug we now go on to clean up if I still had any cards I would discard them which is why you always want to use all your cards but there's lots of

different combinations of how you can do that we go on to the next round recovery once again I've got that tough tough choice now all of my stall my best Archer tapped either I spend time getting them back into fighting shape which means I can untap them or

I focus on me and get rid of these this is still the sword of damocles a one in six chance I could die but I want my teammates back so I will risk all I will risk all alrighty so now destiny we find out what destiny has in

mind and and unexpected allies taken hostage okay this is an ongoing event this will stick around until I spin to defense and I've got one honestly when I spend to defense I can place an enemy on this under oh okay this is actually a good thing this can

stick around and if I've got to defense I can spend this to place an enemy and this on the resolved file so basically one of my allies was taken hostage but whenever I want they wanted to be taken hostage I can spend the defense and they can turn

their tables on the captors and just get rid of somebody instantly and the card has gone too so basically it says that they were taken hostage but it was a trap that I've set for the bad guys and that means no bad guys are coming out no other

events are happening so this round I am safe now somewhere in this deck is the evidence I have now taken out to win this I have to have one guy guy taken out I have to have no bad guys on the Destiny track and except and the evidence

does have to be out there if I can make all that happen but there's only one evidence card in this entire deck so I got a search until I find it but probably before I find it I'll run afoul of some other smugglers as well but anyway so

since there's no great danger right now I draw my three cards and this is gonna be around where I can just start getting ready getting prepared for what's gonna come in the future I could get my judo chop into play again it needs to cheat I have no

cheap and so this is a martial arts card when I tap it if I spend a cheat I get plus one for every other martial arts card so this would be my second and so if I kept you know so this basically I can turn a chi into

a point of damage the same way this lets me turn a Chi into a point of damage unfortunately my black belt I'm really surprised is not a martial arts card because it's an item not a skill but remember I've got that achievement in mind if I can get

three martial arts cards into play before the game is over I will permanently or unlock for future games whether I play solo like now or with other players I will permanently unlock upgrade so I definitely want to get this into play but even better would be the judo

throw although it's more expensive when I'm doing this I remember I had another one of these when I draw during a combat test I get to keep the card instead of discarding it that is awesome as well but here's the thing I'm gonna I can't hold on the

card someone around to another I gotta sigh I could just discard both of these I mean oh here's a here's a simple thing I could do I could discard both of these and get too cheap to prepare for later that she will fund my karate kick it will

fund my black belt or it will fund a judo card that I get later on I've got another favor from the UN and now I've got that defense so I will spend that defense to get this in play and now on a future turn I can place an

ally from my discard pile on top of the deck and Mulligan is still in here and if I know Mulligan is at the top of the deck that means I'm not doing a draw a blind draw when I'm trying to do a skill check so that could be

very handy at the right time so I'll put that in play this was a nice simple turn I was just preparing for later stuff fate there's no bad guys here because and I've set a trap for them clean up I've got nothing more a discard we go on

to the next one and this time I got nothing so I will it's just a flesh wound and boom it's gone now I'm totally safe the next thing I draw it can't kill me although he can still slow me down plus if I get rid of these ended

bystanders I can start using my rifle but anyway um let's see what destiny has in store its parent the big bad he has 6 hit points and as soon as he comes out shuffle all the events in the resolved file back into the deck and play a desti

card so ferret he comes out but he's not alone Oscar which I got rid of is back and now something else is gonna come out and it is trapped dunt dunt ah or heroin all right so this is an event I have to resolve this immediately now and

this is a symbol that says draw card and see what's that so I got draw this and see what icon is on it it is a chi icon and this gets discarded so s too bad I would have liked to have this because I have the Chi to

put it in play but it just got discarded so there were no skulls so I don't my weapons there was no defense if there was defense I would have been able to an issue I would have been able to turn the tables on my captors but if there

got draw three one two three and all I've got is two Chi but you know what if I have Jennings or zubaba take out these innocent bystanders I could start firing with the rifle and try to take these guys out just in a 1 hit them and let's

see so I've got a break I've got another favour from the UN and my karate kick novice I can't put down to play so I'll just discard that to give myself a third Chi and now I don't have the things that want those three Chi to put them

into play and what should i do what should i do well um if I had to defense which I don't I could um turn the tables on ferret and yo one my allies would actually capture me be gone just like that and by the way defeating ferret is

on my achievements list so if I beat him then I will get another permanent upgrade which I'll be able to use in future rounds so here's the problem I could discard this break it'll give me a skull so I could fight I could discard this it'll give me

anything so that would be one defense but not the other defense I need and right now I don't have any cards that allow me um yeah oh shoot that is a bummer what am I gonna do folks I'm not quite sure but I think I'm gonna stop right

there because that should give you a pretty good idea of how the phantom the card game flows and forged file thoughts please run folks this was a paid Kickstarter preview so you should take my opinions with a grain of salt and with that all the way what did

Jen and I think we loved it I think this is fantastic there is so much fun in this game and I should say right up front I didn't know anything about the Phantom I mean I'd seen the 90s action you know superhero movie with Billy Zane and I

don't really remember it very well at all and I guess I was aware that he's widely regarded being the first costume superhero yes Zorro existed before but Zorro yo-yo in the traditional superhero guard with the skin tight outfit and you know the mask where you can't see the

pupils he was the first one and he set the stage for Batman and Captain America and and Superman everything that came as a nod I guess to the Phantom and that's very cool just in terms of comic history so I'm so happy to see that such an important

seminal character has gotten an absolutely crackerjack little solo or two player only a adventure game and there is so much to love here you know three very very unique adventures I was just showing you one portion of one of them but the one where you up you'll make

your lifelong bond with your wolf companion or the one where I mean I should warn folks the one that features fairly relatively unknown on Pharrell's to be a very dark storyline all about trying to track down and stop white slavers who are capturing people and you know selling

them to slavery and having to rescue slaves I know this doesn't shy away from the fact that there are some heavy themes in this game because that's true to the comic book origins of the phantom yo he operates predominantly in Africa trying to effectively atone for all the

evils that white colonial powers have visited on that continent he's kind of you know the the the antidote for that you know he's got kind of a white Savior complex and all that but um you know I do think the I appreciate the phantom you know has an

important place in comics pantheon him you know and known for really strong central characters like Diana who is just as cool and as badass as phantom in this game um and yeah whether I playing the soul I played this now four times solo and once is a two-player

game and I've enjoyed it every single time and you know this is the second time I played through Diana's adventure and even though it hits the same beats it's playing out very different because the last time I played this rifle jammed on me almost immediately and I never

had a use for it and um you know and I really leveraged my allies instead and you know this one I don't really I have a lot of you know karate or kung fu or martial arts available to me the last time I did and the last time

I played fair it didn't come out till the very very end and he tried but you know the card he drew ended up being nothing worse here he has really set me back but I laid a trap for parrot that did not happen before instead I was having

to deal with bomb defusal z– last time I played it so he he only comes with three missions but you will get interesting replay out of them especially because of this very cool idea that if you can complete these achievements or if you can successfully loot you permanently

increase Diana or the Phantom's decks with cool more powerful abilities and you need those abilities to be able to increase the difficulty level and beat the game on heroic and all that so it creates this really nice loop as you just get stronger and stronger and again the

that you know this particular storyline it actually has branching paths depending on how you do on each given chapter so there's a line I spit of variety there as well so the game uh-huh you know it's got tons of replayability built in and all that aside the gameplay

itself is so much fun every round I got three cards and try and I love multi-use cards one of my favorite mechanisms of all time and having to make the tough choices about how to use them discard them for resources get them into play sacrifice them for other

things and you'll as you build up a stronger and stronger collection of stuff you can pull off really intricate and interesting combo chain moves that really remind me a lot of my number 2 game of last year was it Marvel champions this game hat feels very very some

of that although it plays very differently with the way you manage resources and you build them up and then you have to spend them another same thing too the way wild cards work I've never seen in any other game usually in most games wild cards oh if I

get a wild card I take a wild card token and when I use it it can be anything here when you get a wild card you have to decide right then what it's going to be but more importantly you can whenever you draw a card that shows the

wild card icon you can spend anything so there's a lot of flexibility if I need to do a fight and I can't get the cards hey I can spend any three resources and trigger the fight because wild card usage of resources is super prevalent in this game it's

a big big part more so than most games of this ilk so it's fold really fun combo stuff it's full of multi-use card play it's got character upgrades that last from session to session and while I only showed the coop game I should say this the two-player game

is really nice as well we very much enjoyed it the way that works is pretty much everything is exactly the same you go through the steps it's my turn I'll draw a destiny and I'll draw three cards I'll try to use them and the big difference is I

could use my cards that are untapped to try to do stuff or if you agree I can use your cards and that's where the real collusion happens between players that okay well you know what if you let me use your if you let me use devil you know

your your dog or if you let me use your horse then I could get the extra card I need to do this that or the other but oh you're saving it for your hand right but you don't know what hands you're gonna have so there's a lot of

cross pollenization of players working together using each other hey you call Jennings Jennings is here for you on your turn use him to get your item back so you can use it a second time so there's a nice Evan flow between players and it feels very good as

a two-player game as well but I mean yeah it's a blast as a solo game I love the retro comic art you know obviously take him straight from the comic books and it's very bright vibrant colorful tons of replayability it's just a sharp design all around I am

very very very impressed by the phantom the card game Oh yikes I was about to sign up but I remembered one more thing I really like trying to think of stuff I don't like but I like everything about this game it's just fun and fast and fluid it

has a great arc but one of the coolest elements is this damage deck this push your luck thing that you'll at the end of this round if I don't take these two guys out I got to draw two cards that would be a head injury which means I

cannot activate my allies anymore and a leg injury oh and all my hand size has been decreased and you know what I can live with these because at the beginning of every round that tough tough choice do I untap all my resources all my allies all my items

or do I get rid of these damage cards that is always a very sick thing because you always want to leave them there because they're not you know I can work around this and as long as I don't draw the other head injury I'm fine I won't die

but I need Jennings back because he's gonna let me with all this other stuff and if instead I just keep everything tapped to get rid of these I've still got a problem cuz these do not go back into my damage deck they are removed from the game and

if I ever run out of damage cards and I need to draw another one that's another way I lose and the interesting thing is once a bunch of damage cards are out of the game well I don't have anymore I can draw but I know hey you know

what my hat when a hitter is already gone there's no way I can suffer two head injuries cuz one of has already been removed I don't have to worry that if I have another head injury active if it's gonna be a problem for me because the other ones

already out of the game so while things are getting more and more desperate as I'm running out of time I'm also getting a greater sense of control because I can better anticipate what this damage deck is gonna throw at me that is really clever too and while I

haven't played it the game comes with a variant where you can have lasting injuries where you'll after you rest and you take the injuries they don't go into a out of the game pile they go into your discard pile and they start clogging your deck up and when

you draw them they have no icons they don't help you they don't hurt you they just clog up your hand and slow down your deck and prevent you for what you need that's a very cool thematic idea that I've got lasting wounds that stick with me until I

actually finish the game you know it could really up the difficulty I suspect I don't think I'd want to try that until I have upgraded my deck a few more times with a couple more runs and I'm go through a couple adventures so I can really start you

know filling things up but that's a cool idea too and it's great it's a great marriage of mechanisms you know the push your luck leads to deck clogging and thematics cuz it really feels appropriate these wounds linger I took care of them but they can still flare up

at the worst possible time awesome stuff so impressed with the phantom the card game j'onn kick-started right now and that is the preview folks thanks for watchin have a very nice day talk to you later so long bye bye
