Hi, and welcome back on my channel! For today, I was thinking about filming a video about traveling in big cities more precisely if you travel in America, but I believe that most of the tips that I'm going to give you can be applied in any big city worldwide.
Me and my boyfriend had travelled last year, in the summer of 2019 during the Work and Travel program, We decided to travel for 2 weeks in a few big cities from America meaning New York, Los Angeles and Hawaii.
I believe that we have organized this trip very well, I think if something wouldn't have worked out well then, we wouldn't have had some very nice memories now about the whole experience.
I wrote here on a piece of paper a few things which I believe, would help everyone and if someone like, a friend, a relative, or any other person would ask me to give them some tips, these would be those.
I know that the video is not very suitable thinking of what is happening right now around the world but I think that in this period of time the majority of people are thinking that as soon as this quarantine and self-isolation will end, they will want to travel and especially for those students that want to go with this Work and Travel program I hope they will be able to go this year, because it's a unique and extraordinary experience.
So, once you arrive in the city you want to visit, (our first destination was New York), you need to think at what do you want to visit, what tourist attractions We got in New York and Los Angeles too those travel passes that give you free access to many tourist attractions From what i know, in NY, we had free access at the Statue of Liberty, One World Observatory, 9/11 Museum and more museums from the list.
Anyway, if you search on the internet, there are more companies that give you these kind of travel passes and it is written at each of them what they offer you, which tourist attractions are included for how many days, depends for every person how many days he/she has to visit the city Once you decided which are the tourist attractions you want to visit, I recommend you to look on the map of that city especially for the big cities for sure there are on the internet if you search 'tourist map' you'll find maps which have already highlighted the main attractions of that city.
We used also the app called ''maps'' (maps.
me) but you have to download before the maps of the cities you want, in this app you can also pin places you want to save The next problem we thought about was 'transportation' we knew from the start that we will rely on public transportation we wouldn't be using taxis because they are expensive and there was no point in that because we only needed something to get us from point A to point B In New York I believe that the transportation system is very well developed and set up In all of the cities, including in Romania, every public transportation company has a site web.
A site where you can find all the lines, the schedules, different types of fares and any other information, eg.
if there are some changes if there is something under construction that make some lines to be out of service are usually posted on these sites and the information is very well updated.
Usually you can download the maps with the routes of the lines you need some sites, if I'm not wrong, Google Maps, or some app from Google, if you wrote that you want from A to B they gave you suggestion about which lines can get you from A to B so we only had to search for the schedule and route of that line.
Every stop is written on the route map so you can follow exactly where you are located, you don't need internet.
While we lived in America for those 3/4 months we didn't have a sim card, we didn't buy one and didn't need one To call at home (in Romania) we used the internet, through Messenger or Whatsapp In these 2 weeks, everywhere where we went there was wireless internet connection.
I want to tell about an app which for us it was a huge help It is called 'Transit' with 's' From what I've searched it only works in North America meaning, US and Canada It is an app which has included all the lines ( of any type of transportation) which you can use in these 2 countries It also shows you both the ways (return also) shows you where is every station at what hour a specific line is supposed to arrive at a certain station and if you have internet it even shows you live where on the route is that bus/etc.
We didn't have internet but we didn't need it anyway with the phone in our hands we knew exactly on which side of the road to sit because it was very easy to use it.
I recommend you to download it We bought the plane tickets through the kayak site In America at least, the plane tickets through this app, are cheaper than on Skyscanner or Momondo While now, when we are in Europe, things are exactly the opposite.
With the plane tickets you have to be careful, at their baggage policy In America the majority of the flying companies have the carry on bag included in the price of the cheapest type of the ticket but in Europe in most of the time, this doesn't apply recently, from what I know, at WizzAir, Blueair and Ryanair the carry on is not included anymore in the price and you have to pay extra.
So you should pay attention to the baggage policy And most importantly to measure your baggage The kayac app has an option to measure you baggage using your camera so this app can be helpful if you don't have a tape measure or a ruler Know that all these apps run in NY, LA and also in Hawaii we expected to do not have a map with their public transportation we expected them to do not work in Hawaii for eg.
the app with the buses (Transit) , we expected to do not have a map with their public transportation if you have a driving licence you can rent a car but pay attention that in America, from what I found out you can rent a car but you have to have a credit card we, those who are traveling through the Work and Travel program the majority of us have a debit card so, i don't know, probably there are companies who rent cars without a credit card but you have to look deeper.
Everything I've told you was a huge help for us, especially, the app Transit and Maps.
me we didn't have any problems meaning ending up in a place we do not know ( a creepy one) or to mistake the buses and to take us 'i don't know where' so as to don't know how to get back this doesn't have to do with how organized we were but we were lucky enough to not have any delays with the planes even if we had minimum one stop at with every plane route We flew from Chicago to NY then NY, to LA and LA Hawaii and from Hawaii to Milwaukee i think, I don;'t remember but anyways on the returning back route we had 2 stops and we didn't have no delays Overall, we didn't have any bad experience throughout the whole trip The only thing we regret is that we didn't film more we didn't take more photos but we hope that sometime in this life we will get again in the places we've been We liked extremely much all the cities we've been They were different There was a huge difference between them I recommend if you get someday somehow there (ie.
America) to try one state ( at least) from each part of the US because it is completely different with a different lifestyle.
This was the video for today, I hope you liked it i hope it will be helpful in the future when you will travel For the moment, this app that I keep talking about, Transit, doesn't work in Europe but I hope that in the future to update it to be available here too because it is of great use.
But you can manage with the maps downloaded from the public transportation sites with the app Maps.
me which works all around the world and with Google Maps but what I forgot to tell you is that this app Transit and also Maps.
me can be used without internet So everything i've told you, works very well without internet, you don't need it which I think is a huge advantage.
If you have any other questions following today's video, that you want me to answer I'm waiting for your comments below and I hope you will be back on my channel at the next video.
